| New Yorkie Mum...my first post on YT! Oscar is a 6mth 2.2lb sweetheart and I've had him now for just over 2mths. I've been reading these forums and though I haven't encountered any major traumas/dramas yet, I feel better prepared for any mishaps I may encounter with this little guy. I am an absolute NUT over this guy - he goes everywhere with me - even to work! Oscar has had diarrhea for a day and a half now and I can't figure out why. He's still eating/drinking as normal (no change in his food) and he's still acting like a puppy (wanting to play, chew, etc.). We spent the weekend at my parents and there was a lot going on on sunday so he wasn't able to take his daily naps like usual - I just wondered if the change in his routine might have caused the diarrhea? We came home last night and the diarrhea has persisted though not as frequent (just loose bm once today- he usually only goes twice a day). Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this.... ALSO, I've read the posts about vaccinations and such - there was mention about NOT giving the rabies vaccine while he is under sedation for his neuter - can someone explain this further to me? My vet was going to give him his shot when he went in for his neuter - should I say no? She wanted to give it to him when I took him in at 4mths for his first check-up after I got him and I knew to wait until he was at least 6mths - now I dont know what to do as far as this is concerned. I'm also extremely nervous about his neuter... sooo scary to think of this little guy having to go through that - I've heard some scary stories - any words of encouragement or suggestions to make things easier on him and me would be much appreciated!!! Thanks so much - sorry for the lengthy post!!!

| Welcome to YT! You're baby is a cutie. Ok, re diarrhea: I'm taking this out of my first aid book, common causes dietary problems stress parasitic infection infectious diseas tumors disease chronic inflammatory disease Try this first: high-fiber, low-fat diet. boiled chicken with white rice. If the diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours, or if animal is very young (under 1 yr) animal should be checked out by a vet.

| Regarding rabies: we live in Jersey, and my vet said to wait until 6 months. There's no need to be under sedation. Baby didn't even feel it.

| I also wait until at least 6 months to give the rabies, but my dogs are not exposed to other dogs in training classes, boarding, etc. The reason you don't want to give a vaccine under anesthesia is because if they have a reaction and go into shock (not because of the anesthesia, but the dog needs to be awake so you will know if something goes wrong). Make sure your vet uses isoflurane gas for the anesthesia and have pre-op blood tests done. Your baby is so small I would make sure he is 100% before any surgery - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. About the diarrhea (actually sounds more like soft stools than diarrhea, diarrhea is frequent), if no other symptoms are present, I would put him on chicken and rice, and if it isn't gone within 24 hours I would take him in to the vet. |

| Hi Oscar's Mummy, I love my Sweetie too, she is my everything! About the Rabies, my Vet dose not give the Rabies at the same time. He give it alone because all the shots at once might be to much for a little Yorkie. As far as the diarrhea, BabyFidgette's mom had some good advice.

| This is so great! So many great replies already! Thanks!!! Just curious... doesn't exactly fit this forum, but any thoughts on a Yorkie that doesn't bark? Everyone seems to have their own opinions.... The things that would normally trigger a bark (other dogs, barking, doorbells, new people, playing) dont phase him. When I got him from the breeder she warned me that he was an incredibly timid dog (no kidding - he shakes like crazy over new situations and new things) and you could totally tell from his demeanor and the way he interacted with the other puppies. She also felt as a result that he probably wouldn't bark much. At 6 mths he still hasn't made a peep, just has a little whine now and then which is just toooo cute. People are just baffled when I tell them about my "perfect Yorkie" that doesn't bark, since they are notorious for yipping - in reality, I think that he will "find his voice" at some point.. it's just a matter of time. Any thoughts on this or similar stories?

| Welcome to YT . . . you will truly enjoy this site! I think that Yorkies's have sensitive stomachs and I am speaking just from my experience with Tiger. He's been to the vet twice already on soft stool . . found nothing wrong with him and cost me a few bucks . . . you will get some good remedies on this site for diahrea problems. Of course, if it continues then it is always best to consult a vet. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali has gotten diahrrrea from being stressed out from a change in her routine. My last Yorkie Gracie hardly ever barked. I could go 6 months without hearing her bark. Be thankful my Pom never stops barking. He should do fine with his neutering. He is a real cutie.

| Barking My little 4 month old male yorkie loves to bark. I thought it was so cute when I first brought him home at 8 weeks and he barked. He only weighed a pound and everyone that saw him was amazed that he barked (he is a dog after all). He still loves to bark at my 2 other dogs and my husband, or anyone else who stops by but it's not so cute now. His bark has gotten louder. I let him bark and few times and then I have to tell him to hush. He usually quiets right down. |

| I was really worried about getting Hobbs neutered so I made an appointment to sit down with the vet and ask some simple questions to ease my mind about it. After I talked to him, I felt MUCH better. Like someone previously said, isoflourine gas is considered the safest for small dogs. So, you could talk to the vet and ask him/her what type of anesthesia they use and ask any other questions that you might have. I promise that talking to the vet will ease your mind like it did mine. I have never heard that you should wait to get a rabies vaccination. Hobbs got his at 4 months and was perfectly fine, and he is barely 3 lbs. AND Hobbs rarely barks. My parents have a yorkie that barks constantly, so I am grateful that Hobbs isn't a loud-mouth! Although, he could turn into one! Who knows! GOOD LUCK with everything! I am sure the neutering will turn out fine! |
