Unhappy Vomiting Episode

Jax had an attack of vomiting this morning, which is very unusual for him. Heís between ten and eleven months old and, in the seven plus months heís been here, heís only vomited twice, each time just a tiny bit. (One of those times was the one time I gave him a small piece of pineapple, which had been suggested as a poop-eating deterrent.)

This morning was different. He was perfectly normal yesterday, and he slept well last night. I always move him from his crate to his pen very early in the morning, because he pees in his crate if heís there too long. So I put him in his pen with fresh water and a bowl of kibble about 5am. He only ate a few pieces of the kibble, but thatís not unusual ó he never eats much in the morning. He acted perfectly normal until about 7:15, when he vomited. And then he vomited again and again and again ... only small (and decreasing) amounts, but at least eight times in about 20 minutes. Then he took a drink of water and vomited that back up. Then he had a soft BM (not watery or mucousy, just softer than normal ó but after he had already had two normal BMs this morning). Then he took another drink of water, which he didnít vomit, and curled up in his bed and went to sleep.

All this happened within less than 30 minutes. It was still too early to call the vet, and he was sleeping peacefully, so I decided to wait until he woke up to see how he was feeling. He woke up in about an hour, and he acted like nothing had happened. I gave him a little bit of Puppy Nutrical, which he ate enthusiastically. Then I gave him half of a 2.5 ounce jar of Gerber turkey baby food, which he also ate enthusiastically. After about forty minutes, I gave him the other half jar of baby food, and he ate that enthusiastically. Since then, there has been no more vomiting, no more pooping (although heís peed several times), and heís acting completely normal, bouncing around and wagging his tail and wanting to play.

So Iím not sure what to do. On the one hand, this was so unusual for him that it was scary. Especially since he only weighs a bit over four pounds, so he doesnít have any ďreserveĒ to spare. On the other hand, itís really difficult to talk to the vet right now, since the office is still using pandemic procedures. Even if I took him in, I would have to sit in the parking lot (on a day thatís supposed to be close to 100 degrees), and I wouldnít actually talk to the vet. And he seems perfectly fine. But I have no idea what could have caused the vomiting. He hasnít eaten anything other than his usual food, and he hasnít even been outside for several days, because itís been so hot.

Iím not even sure why Iím writing this ... just because it scared me, I guess. My plan is to watch him closely and call the vetís office if thereís any further problem. And cross my fingers this is an isolated incident, not the start of a serious problem.

All of my Yorkies were hopeless foragers, would eat anything they could find from the yard or kitchen floor so vomiting is fairly common occasionally in younger dogs and usually not worrisome unless repeated and/or other symptoms accompany it. Maybe he just ate something he shouldn't have or fought off a little tummy bug. Vet him if further symptoms. Don't blame you for being worried - it's a mommie thing. Hopefully he's fine from now on.

Over the years we have had many puppies...and many isolated incidents of intermittent vomiting which cleared up all on their own. It is always upsetting, and needs to be monitored, but unless he shows a repeat of symptoms of a stomach illness I would say that you are probably safe. As mentioned, he may have found something which he ingested (they can get a hold of things that they shouldn't in a split second). Of course, if he shows signs of a continuing problem, a vet visit is in order. Otherwise, monitor and love him!

Thanks for the emotional support. So far, so good. He’s been acting normal for over 12 hours, and he ate his dinner. I’m hoping that, whatever caused the vomiting, it’s over. Although I will worry for at least another day, because that’s what I do.
