Jax had an attack of vomiting this morning, which is very unusual for him. He’s between ten and eleven months old and, in the seven plus months he’s been here, he’s only vomited twice, each time just a tiny bit. (One of those times was the one time I gave him a small piece of pineapple, which had been suggested as a poop-eating deterrent.)

This morning was different. He was perfectly normal yesterday, and he slept well last night. I always move him from his crate to his pen very early in the morning, because he pees in his crate if he’s there too long. So I put him in his pen with fresh water and a bowl of kibble about 5am. He only ate a few pieces of the kibble, but that’s not unusual — he never eats much in the morning. He acted perfectly normal until about 7:15, when he vomited. And then he vomited again and again and again ... only small (and decreasing) amounts, but at least eight times in about 20 minutes. Then he took a drink of water and vomited that back up. Then he had a soft BM (not watery or mucousy, just softer than normal — but after he had already had two normal BMs this morning). Then he took another drink of water, which he didn’t vomit, and curled up in his bed and went to sleep.

All this happened within less than 30 minutes. It was still too early to call the vet, and he was sleeping peacefully, so I decided to wait until he woke up to see how he was feeling. He woke up in about an hour, and he acted like nothing had happened. I gave him a little bit of Puppy Nutrical, which he ate enthusiastically. Then I gave him half of a 2.5 ounce jar of Gerber turkey baby food, which he also ate enthusiastically. After about forty minutes, I gave him the other half jar of baby food, and he ate that enthusiastically. Since then, there has been no more vomiting, no more pooping (although he’s peed several times), and he’s acting completely normal, bouncing around and wagging his tail and wanting to play.

So I’m not sure what to do. On the one hand, this was so unusual for him that it was scary. Especially since he only weighs a bit over four pounds, so he doesn’t have any “reserve” to spare. On the other hand, it’s really difficult to talk to the vet right now, since the office is still using pandemic procedures. Even if I took him in, I would have to sit in the parking lot (on a day that’s supposed to be close to 100 degrees), and I wouldn’t actually talk to the vet. And he seems perfectly fine. But I have no idea what could have caused the vomiting. He hasn’t eaten anything other than his usual food, and he hasn’t even been outside for several days, because it’s been so hot.

I’m not even sure why I’m writing this ... just because it scared me, I guess. My plan is to watch him closely and call the vet’s office if there’s any further problem. And cross my fingers this is an isolated incident, not the start of a serious problem.
