YT Addict | Collapsed trachea Winston has been suffering from this now for the better part of a year, sometimes so bad at nite because he sleeps on the bed with us it keeps us awake the better part of the night. Of course he’s not resting/sleeping either, have tried the thunder jacket, massages etc.only thing that helped was a trip to the emergency clinic where for 3 days he was on relaxers and in a oxygen tent. Unfortunately at $1500 that’s not really a option as it was only a temporary solution. Anyone have this problem, solutions. At wits end.

YT Addict | We’ve also just ordered hound honey trachea syrup and a powder supplement by paw healer for gagging, hope it’ll work in conjunction with the hydrocondone. Will keep all advised. Fingers and toes crossed!

| What works best for my dog is hydromet syrup through the vet. Glad to hear your dog is doing better! |

| Collapsing trachea can be very serious. In addition to hydrocodone, our vet prescribed Lomotil to ease the coughing. Monitor for signs of enlarged heart, congestive heart failure, retaining fluid in the lungs. If the condition progresses you may want to consult with a surgeon regarding a tracheal stent. |

| Agreed. Our surgeon recommended as last option. Said basically that he’s not aware of any pup that has lived longer than 3 years after surgery, so in essence you are setting a countdown clock if you elect to do it. Our Sophie had a collapsing trachea and we were hesitant to have it done because we couldn’t bear to think of losing her in three years. A year later, last New Years Eve, she died suddenly from cardiac arrest, brought on by ARDS, a result of an undiagnosed enlarged heart and pulmonary edema, caused by her trachea. In retrospect, we would have given anything for two more years. |
