Giving pills and powder ? on what I'm using- nervous about it. It's two weeks since Bells was in the hospital. Giving the pills and powder is a challenge. Especially as I'm worried it's too much extra food and stuff. Denamarin & Pepcid in the a.m. for the Pancreatitis, 1st Melatonin for Cushings. I've used the Applegate Organic, no fat, no nitrates, no antibiotic for this. Tear off enough to cover pill and 3 small pieces..size of chicklet. Give her plain first, pills piece second and 2 plain really quickly. Nighttime is another Melatonin and 1/4 tsp of flaxseed for the Cushings. First night I didn't have the Melatonin yet but put flaxseed powder into 1/4 tsp of lowfat vanilla yogurt and she licked it up. Tonight- she walked away. So wrapped Melantonin in a portion of a Greenies Pill Popper, tore off whatever didn't cover, took three small pieces from that, threw the rest away and did the 4 piece fake out thing. It was harder than the turkey to accomplish. Put the powder in about 1/4-1/2 tsp of beef baby food ( 1g fat per serving which is the entire small jar), She licked it off the spoon. Wouldn't take the chicken type, though. So, my question is this...is this ok? Can we use the Greenies Pill things with pancreatitis? She's only eating the Royal Canin Low fat food...5 or 6 spponfuls three times a day. I don't want to cause another attack. Thanks in advance.

Those with more experience can chime in. Does seem many dogs do not tolerate the greenies pill pockets well. See ConsumerAffairs.com.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Does she like peanut butter..? I know it's fatty but IF she really likes this and if it gets her meds into her -- ask your vet / vet tech (to ask the vet for you) if you can use PB to "coat" the pills. OR -- get PB2 - which is a peanut butter powder - 85% less fat and tastes awesome! You may be able to then mix any powders/seeds etc into the PB-powder, moisten, and give. https://smile.amazon.com/Plantation-...%2Bbutter&th=1

Also, are you limited to the form of the meds/supplements? If she is finishing up the food, can you crush the pills and mix with food?

She's finicky...won't eat consistently so putting her pills / powder on food wastes them. She will take a bite and stop or not bother at all. She doesn't like peanut butter at all.

I was never consistently successful feeding my late senior sweetie pills. Did have moderate success feeding crushed pills to her. I'd crush the pill between two spoons and transfer the crushed result to a dampened finger and then rub the pill bits on to her tongue.

I'm sure this is hard! Did the vet think you should continue the Mirtazapine (appetite stimulant)? What about pumpkin? Are any of the meds/supplements available in a form that would allow you to administer them by oral syringe? Last edited by KatysMom; 06-04-2018 at 07:32 AM.

Pills I feel for you having to administer so many oral meds. I don’t know what the fat content of the pill poppers is. But perhaps you could just use less to wrap up the pills. Or find something to wrap pills in that she likes. I had to give my dog Pepcid at night with her last meal and the pills were not accepted. So I got a compounding vet to make up a chewy, chicken flavored, pill. But you perhaps could get a flavor she likes. I put it in the food and he laps it up. Compounded meds are more expensive, especially as you have so many. Perhaps the vet could suggest an easier form of the meds to give her. Or a mechanical pill popper that pops the pills down the throat and they have to swallow. It does seem however that your baby does not feel good and taking anything by mouth is hard for her. Pity they don’t have skin patch delivery systems for dogs as they do for humans!

| Nutro has moist treats and we use those for pills. I also use pills for the lignans not powder which is easier for us.

The vet specifically said not to use the oil...that it didn't have the part of the flaxseed that they need...is the pill different- actually has the part they need? I'd rather give another pill then hope she eats the powder.

Pills I think most treats are higher in fat, that is why the dogs like them?? I do use Fruitable chewies now and again, that are low fat. Again, I see that your poor baby has little appetite for food or anything else, and therefore it will be harder to get pills down. If it is not contra indicated perhaps your baby could be given a shot of Cerenia for nausea? I do feel for you, very stressful situation.
