| Blindness, eye infections, skin infections and sores around mouth and eyes. I have a 5 year old male yorkie. Over the past year he has developed severe blindness. He can only see a few feet in front of him. He has reoccurring eye infections as well as small skin Infections on his belly. He has sores around his mouth and by his eyes. Once off of his antibiotics his infections return. We have been around and around with his course of meds and the return of the symptoms. Does anyone have experience with these symptoms and reoccurrence? I'll add photos soon! |

| Couple questions please. Has he seen a board certified doggie opthamologist and a board certified doggie dermatologist or internal medicine docs!

| We have been working with our local vet. He is scheduled for an appointment with the dermatologist in 4 weeks. I have switched his food from a chicken base protein to a venison and chickpea kibble to rule out food basic food allergies. He has been on the new food for 2 months with no change in his symptoms. When I bring him back in we are going to do a "tear test" to make sure he is making proper tears. He is now back on clavamox for his skin infection. Neo-Poly-Dex drops for his eyes and we just started Apoquel in case it is environmental allergies. We have used the same drops and Clavamox before to treat his symptoms and it will clear up the problem but once we are through the treatment with in 2 or 3 weeks the symptoms are back. However this is our first time trying the Apoquel. |

| He just started Apoquel today. My vet didnt think that it was allergies initially but while we have taken blood and urine samples and treated 3 times for the infections this is the avenue we are trying now. I am not sure is allergies could attribute to the blindness? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First and foremost, has the infectious agent been cultured...?!! Or at the very least, did the Vet take a skin smear and look at that under the scope and confirm it was bacterial in nature...? Are the sores around mouth/eyes due to him itching there or ? It would really help to see a picture of the sores, as well as belly. I can't fathom why, with recurrent infections, the Vet is using clavamox ! Your dog should be on Simiplicef x 28 days if this is bacterial (ie, pyoderma). Whenever there are recurrent skin infections like this that cannot be tied to allergies, thyroid should be checked AND Cushings absolutely should be considered. In addition, Diabetes should've been discussed for sure bc of the blindness -- is he diagnosed w/ juvenile cataracts then or.....?

I will ask my vet about Simiplicef. Thank you for the recommendation! I have tried multiple times to upload pictures with no success. I will try again. | |

What test was done for Cushings, bc that's not part of a normal blood panel. I would really see a Vet Ophthalmologist asap.
