"gloopy" eyes I have a 14 week old Yorkie-Poo puppy who gets a lot of gloopy "stuff" around his eyes. It gets so bad it can glue his eyes shut. He usually wakes up with it in the morning, and it gets crusty and clumpy. I use a wet washcloth to soften it up, then have to work to clean it off. He doesn't enjoy that any more than I do, and he's so tiny I'm afraid I might hurt his eye. Is there something I can do to prevent this from forming? Thanks for the advice!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and congrats on your new baby ! If it's as bad as this, you really do need to get to a vet ASAP bc it's likely an actual eye infection and he needs prescription eye ointment. Take a picture of how it looks in the morning at its worst so that the vet can see it. It's not normal *at all* for it to get this bad - but we've all been there w/ eye infections in our kiddos - it's not uncommon at all.

I have a vet appointment on Monday, so will have it checked out. I did find that cutting the hair around his eyes seems to help...maybe having hair in his eyes made them tear more. I'm new to Yorkies, and have never had a dog who needed hair trims! He looks SO adorable now that his eyes are more visible...and those eyes are so expressive...wins my heart all over again when he looks at me with that "I love you Mommy" puppy expression!

At my local pet store, one of the workers told me this is something he'll probably outgrow...that it's fairly common in puppies but as he gets older, it gets better. Anybody agree with that? I'm still having hi vet check it out on Monday!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Puppies can have more goop as puppies, sometimes bc of teething - but shouldn't be to the point of being 'glued shut' - that's definitely excessive. As for cutting - people w/ yorkies go both ways around the eyes.

Terrible eye gunk and crust I recently got a silky yorkie. According to the vet he is roughly 4 to 4 1/2 years old. He has a terrible eye (1) problem. The vet gave me antibiotic ointment for the eye. He said it was an infection. Well, I used the ointment for the proper time and took the dog (Riley) back to the vet and now he says it's not an infection it is dry eye. He told me to use over the counter artificial tears 4 or 5 times a day? The poor little guy has bad crusty eye in the morning and squints all day and has goop in his eye ALL THE TIME. Can anyone tell me if there is anything else I can do and if the drops of artificial tears are hurting or helping? Seems to me the crust would be coming from the drops? I don't know what else to do....but those two vet solutions are not working. He also said I would have to put the artifial tears in his eye for the rest of his life!

But honestly if he's squinting like this much, it really makes me wonder about more going on here - like corneal abrasions or something .

Hope you find a solution soon. We worry about our little ones when we can't immediately solve their health issues.

Could it be allergies?

I don't think allergies because it is only one eye. Thanks everyone for your help. I don't see how a vet could know everything about every breed of dog!! I'll check on some more expensive drops, but am I wrong in my thinking that the wet is causing the crust? So why add wet?

Hi DAE, I'm not able to diagnose your crusty eye problem. Very late in life, my little one, Katy, developed some early am crusty eye issues. She was more than 10 years older than your pup. Katy had some allergies and from time to time suffered ear infections. When one or both ears were causing problems, I'd sometimes find soft goop in her eye/eyes. Eye issues can be the result of injury to or problem with the eye itself or, like Katy, the problem can be a secondary--caused by something else that is amiss. I'm glad you have consulted with a professional. Your pup is young--hope you'll seek out a specialist if the problem doesn't clear up for you. Thank you for taking good care of your sweetheart.

Goopy Thanks for the reply. If it is only one eye, probably not allergy. My dog had blepheritis and goopy eyes and for weeks the eye specialist vet had me put all kinds of drops in the eyes. In the end the vet said stop all the eye meds and just flush the eye with sterile saline for eyes, while holding down the lower eyelid. After a few days the eyes improved. The vet said that sometimes the eye drops do not get under the lids where bad things accumulate! I am not suggesting this is your issue, but it was amazing to me that it worked for my dog. We tried every eye med we could, to no avail. But probably it could be a scratched cornea? Good luck, poor baby.

KISS technique? Sorry I do not know what this technique is. Googling did not help! Thank you.
