| Bowel problem I have a 18 year old male fur baby. He is prone to pancreatitis. He just had a mild episode and received Flagyl and pain med. His vet has put him on rx Royal Canin GI low fat canned food this time. Previously he was on low fat diet. The . problem we are having is the Flagyl makes him constipated. She had said he would probably need to be on this the rest of his life. The vet suggested stop meds put him on pumpkin and now he has very soft stools. I feel so bad for him. I don't know what to do anymore. i have contacted vet (this is part of being a senior dog. Well there should be a happy medium to make him more comfortable. He is eating, drinking and getting around good. Looking for your help. I'm stressed out and I know he is tired of getting his bottom washed. Love this boy so much. i feed bad for him that i can't fix it.Thank you for listening. |

| Instead of giving one or the other . Add a dollop of pumpkin to the food so there’s a balance to help him along . You’ve been blessed to have him so long and I know it hurts to see him living out his golden years uncomfortably. Hang in there .

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Okay - so what is the timing of all of this? When did Flagyl stop - when did pumpkin begin? Pancreatitis wreaks havoc on the body, as I'm sure you know - so it can take months for the body to really come back into balance. If too soft, I would perhaps try titrating pumpkin dosage. I would also probably be giving a probiotic to support intestinal flora, which I'm sure is a mess. My Vet has always supported the use of Benefiber powder over pumpkin - so you may want to consider that instead - so much easier to give/titrate.

| I have been blessed. He was 2 yrs old when I got him where he had been abused. He is spoiled to say the least. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Such a sweet dog. He has always had dry food so I don't know if this could be part of problem. I've been giving him pumpkin 2 x day with canned rx, also get boiled chicken tenders chopped. He gets feed 3 x day since he is picky eater. It's always been hard to keep weight on him 6.5 lb. should be 7 according to vet. Thank you for your thoughts |
