| Anybody have experience with toe tumor? A few weeks ago I felt a strange lump (black lump on toe joint) on my dogs foot and thought something had bitten her. Waited a few days as it was over 4th July weekend, when I took her in, vet (not my usual vet, but same office) said he thought it was a tumor. He said to recheck in 2 weeks, did not want to aspirate because he thought it was blood filled and afraid it wouldn't stop bleeding. So I take her back, on way there feel another lump near her armpit. Vet thinks she has a toe tumor, wants to do surgery, will also aspirate the 2nd lump I found, but just thinks fatty tumor. May have to amputate toe and will send cells to pathology. Anybody have experience with this? It's going to cost me about $1400 Not that money is the most important thing, but if I do the surgery and then if she had cancer, I would never do chemo. Too costly and I think quality of life would suck. I would appreciate anyone's experiences here. This is very painful for me and really hurting my heart. Every dog I've owned has had some pretty serious health issues as well as myself. Overwhelmed with s**t life keeps throwing at me.

| Before getting surgery I would have it aspirated and then looked at under the microscope before I would do surgery or amputate. There are a lot of different bumps that aren't cancer and aren't anything to worry about.

| I had a foster with a lump on a toe. Turned out to be a cyst and they removed the toe and it was fine afterwards. $1400 sounds a bit high unless it is a specialist doing it. There isn't much to removing a toe. I might want a second opinion on this one....with mine, the specialist looked at the xray ad knew what it was.

| Would you keep in touch with us and let us know what you have found out and what you are going to do? I am so sorry this had to happen and I hope for the best outcome for you and your little one. Hopefully it won't be as serious as your vet seems to think it is and will be a less serious situation as some have talked about to you.

| Thanks guys...things are crazy here right now. I do have an appt with her regular vet (same office though) tomorrow. I decided I didn't want to pay that much if she is still going to be ill and I really didn't get much info. from the first vet. Like is there a good chance removing this and she will be fine? I love my dogs more than anything, but they have cost me a literal fortune. My first dog, Bella, had Addison's disease. My boy dog has collapsing trachea. Emmy just had numerous teeth pulled and now this crops up. So if there is a potentially good prognosis, of course I would do it, otherwise, I wouldn't want to put her through a surgery and still end up suffering and being ill and me completely broke, which I am due to my own health issues. Thanks so much!!! Wish us good thoughts for tomorrow.

| Well that was a devastating appointment. My vet was surprised the other doctor didn't aspirate it, but the other vet said on the first visit (then had 2 week follow-up) it would bleed profusely and he didn't want to do that. My vet aspirated it, it is malignant melanoma. He said the lump I found last time, he didn't think was anything, but he did find an enlarged lymph node and aspirated that. He said looked like it had spread to the lymph node as well, but her lungs are clear. He said surgery should have been done immediately!! It's been nearly a month the other vet had me wait. He said if it was his dog he would def. do the surgery, otherwise the tumor on her foot will get larger and she will have less time. He only does surgery on Thursdays, but is getting her in on his lunch break tomorrow -that's what kind of guy he is. I broke down and cried in front of him, the vet tech, and another tech just outside the room, and I never cry, ever! I guess I had my hopes up that it would be nothing; this is just really shocking and unexpected. Seriously, thought it was a bug bite. I think Emmy is only 8. Heartbroken

| I am so sorry. I hoped it would be something not so difficult. Aside from surgery, there is a vaccine that can be used with some success. It isn't like chemo...it is something to help the body fight the cancer. I had read about it some time ago when one of mine had melanoma but hers turned out to be ok and not needing treatment. It was on the skin. Apparently those are ok..it is the mouth and feet that are troublesome. Did he mention it to you? Prayers for you and your baby girl....

| Oh, you poor darling girl. My heart fell to my stomach when I read the diagnosis. I am so sorry this had to be this way for you and Emmy. This has to be so frustrating and confusing as to know what to do for her now. I pray you will receive the right decision. Please continue to update us if you possibly can. I wish I had the right words of wisdom for you on this. Bless you both.

It just hurts my heart. I'd rather endure the pain than her. Animals don't understand and my dogs are literally my babies. Thank you for the love and positive thoughts. It means so much to me.

| You are so welcome MoJo. I pray things will work out for the best for your little Emmy. You are right. Animals don't understand why they are feeling pain and not their usual self. It scares them that their world is not the same as it always was when these things happen to them. Your words "It hurts my heart" is what it does also to my heart to hear of this thing happening to her and to all the many other yorkies on here that I keep reading about. That is the perfect way to put it. Thank you for the update.
