| rocky mountain tick fever Ok. Anna hasn't been well for a while. I took her to the vet a few weeks ago. Her white blood count was very high. She'd lost quite a bit of weight. At that time, no fever. The vet suspected it was because she needed a dental. He put her on antibiotics for her teeth, an anti-inflammatory, and scheduled a dental for tomorrow.....which has now been cancelled. She finished her antibiotics a few days ago and is progressively getting worse. She also developed a large lump on her back leg and is limping on it. Her other legs tremble when she tries to stand. I called the vet Monday and he was able to see her today. Her white blood count is lower but still high. He said the lump on her leg is a lymph node and tested her for tick fever. She now has a fever. None of the tests were positive but he said he cannot test for rmsf at his office. He is treating her for it because my husband had it last summer so it is in our area. She is on antibiotics and had a steroid shot. I am sick. My gut knew it was more than her teeth, but I didn't listen. Feeling very sad tonight and praying that I didn't wait too late to get her some help. She's still eating, but doesn't want water. She's peeing and pooping as normal. It is so hard to see her acting like this.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Awwww, so sorry to hear this ! Poor baby. Do not beat yourself up though - how could you have known..? Tick fever can be tough to diagnose, it's not your fault! At our shelter, I've seen so many dogs w/ various types of tick fever and they end up doing very, very well. It can be a long haul in terms of getting them to thrive again - but you can and will get your baby there .

| Feel like I need to update in case some one else goes through this with their pup. The vet started her on doxycycline last night and gave her a steroid injection. He was not as optimistic as I had hoped and warned me that she may have had rocky mountain spotted fever too long. Her legs were wobbly and she could only stand on her own for a few seconds. She couldn't walk because of the lump in her back leg. She could barely hold her head up. She has had 3 doses of the meds and she is a new girl. She's walking all over the house. Her legs are still wobbly causing her to fall pretty easily. But she is soooo much better. I really feel like she is going to make a full recovery. She is eating and drinking almost as much as normal. She has 3 weeks of this med. I am hoping that it is enough to get this nasty illness out of her system.

| Anna has taken a bad turn for the worse. My husband is taking her to the vet today. I have decided that if she can't be helped I will have her put down. I cannot bear watching her suffer. Her body is rigid. She whines when she breathes. She can barely walk and falls a lot. I am pretty sure this is all returning because her steroid shot wore off. I am hoping the vet gives her oral steroids for a while to see if she will respond. She yelps when I pick her up. I am heartbroken. She is still eating but doesn't want to drink.

| Maybe some hopeful news. The vet gave her a thorough exam and after reviewing all of her blood work he feels she has Addison's disease. Although this is a bit scary, it appears she can still have a quality life with medication. He gave her a week of medication for this. We are to return next week to decide what path to follow. She had a dose today and is up and walking around. Her body is no longer shaking. So, praying this is it. He wants her to continue meds for tick fever just in case. Thank for all of the thoughts and concern.

| She is walking fine this morning and begging for food. I gave her a second dose of prednisolone. I don't notice her body shivering/spasm-ing like it was a few days a go. The vet said it can take a while to find the right dosage and with her being so small it is challenging.

| Addison's disease Fingers crossed! She is doing great. No wobble, she's bouncing around like nothing ever happened. Maybe we got really lucky and her first dosage is the right one for her. The only issue she has is she constantly wants to eat, which is good for now because she had lost so much weight. Thanks for all of the comments and letting me vent my fears here. I feel so, so lucky. A few days ago, I was praying for another week with her. Now, it looks like she's going to be around for a long time.
