| throat is purple and black from bruising. That about says it all. she got it at the vet today during labs and the bile testing. She is now sounding a bit hoarse- sometimes. I asked the tech about collapsing trachea, and was told she wasn't at a risk just because of an injury. Explained how she was just a wiggler. She's being very, very, clingy. She hasn't been like that since she turned 6 months. I know that's from her testing today, but, the throat concerns me. What should I watch out for? Please tell me a bit more about tracheas, and how this type of an injury isn't a concern for that happening? I'm really concerned about swelling, too. It's on both sides. |

| The outside of her throat is purple and black from bruising? What happened? What kind of injury?

| Yep! bad bruising. They said they- and she glossed over it which got me a bit angry- had her basically tied up during testing, and that she was a wiggler, and that's how she got the bruising. I'm not happy about it. Positives are she's eating and drinking.. wanting to play, but definitely isn't feeling 100%. I bruise and swell easily, so I'm just a bit wary. |

| That is not normal and I would not return to a vet's office that caused my dog to have bruises and swelling on the neck. Either a dog is held by a tech or doctor correctly, or the dog is sedated, depending on the test. Never tied up by the neck.

Agree 100% Vet shopping I would go for sure and interview them on procedure for this type of work.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am in 100% agreement with the others. If this is indeed from their procedure of a simple blood draw then a new vet is in order! My only concern is the very off chance it might indicate an underlying medical condition. I usually am able to stay in the room when normal blood draws are done and sometimes will assist the vet when it is one of my big dogs.

| Usually on tiny dogs they draw blood from the jugular and it can cause pretty ugly bruising- my chihuahua is no stranger to this, his meds mean he gets blood drawn often. However, if they had really restrained her hard enough to bruise that way and this isn't due to blood draw, they're absolutely wrong and you should never go back.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I am still trying to wrap my brain around this injury. Both sides of the neck bruised equally? That would seem to indicate some kind of restraint was used. How-ever in all my years with vets doing a jugular draw there is no foreign restraint ie a noose or collar. Instead a vet tech usually lifts and steadies at the jaw so their neck is exposed for the vet to draw blood from. I personally would want to understand this more. Usually tracheas are damaged in vets office after anaesthesia - however a traumatic injury is also possible. Owners can damage tracheas through inappropriate use of collars and restraints.

Yes, both sides. It's why when the tech- who is a brand new tech, not to mention first time ever assisting with this test- explained it, I clearly heard held down/ restrained. But I called back just a little while ago, and they assured me they did NOT tie her up. That it very definitely was a jugular draw, but it very definitely is on both sides of the neck. My poor little independent sassy pants is following me EVERYWHERE and laying down where I am. She is usually too busy getting into everything to do this. Shes' a bit better today, but she's still clinging. I got some ruffs for pringles (daughter left them on the table) and I got the growling at that puppy in the tv, but for the most part, she's uncomfy for sure. I asked about pain relief, told she didn't need it. If I can get her to sit still I'll show you gals a picture. | |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Anemia, thrombocytopenia, Von Willenbrands disease comes to mind. Also there are other vascular diseases as well. BUt I did not want to go there. Better if the vet owns up to inappropriate restraint if that was the case.
