| My babies emergency led me to this forum. Hello everyone, my name is Brandi and recently my baby had an emergency that led me to start extensive research that eventually led me to this wonderful forum. After searching the forum and reading posts I still have a question/concern about my baby boy Parker. Please forgive me if this post is long I just want to provide all the information I can. One week ago my baby boy was running and playing before bedtime and he got so excited he tried to jump on the couch for the first time before I could stop him. He is only 6 months old and he weighs just a few ounces under 5 pounds. But during his craziness he broke his right leg. I immediately called my vet and he met me at his office with his after hours nurse. They sedated him and X-ray showed a CLEAN break of his right leg. He said surgery may be needed but after reviewing the x-ray more closely and speaking with another vet he suggested since the break was clean that we do a splint with cast for 6 weeks changing the splint every 2 weeks. In 6 weeks if the break was not healed we would talk surgery. In the meantime I have to keep Parker confined to his crate only removing him to potty, eat, get loving, take pain meds (if needed) and returned to his crate. I have his crate on wheels and have had him with me at all times though. The first couple of days he was in pain and didn't want to move around. However, after one week his is hopping around his cage putting the cast down to stand on and isn't in any pain at all. He seems to be doing great. But, I am concerned about his leg possibly not healing. Has anyone had success with splinting/casting in place of surgery, and after 6 weeks if it's not completely healed should I continue splint/casting a couple more weeks or just ask for the surgery? Thank you in advance for your help. I will try to attach a picture of my boy to this post. Parker.jpg |

| Since he is so young you might want to consider a second option from a BOARD CERTIFIED vet orthopedic surgeon. I am a big fan of BOARD CERTIFIED vets for accidents and emergency injuries. Won't hurt to consult one.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome - he is just beautiful!!! Hang in there, accidents happen to all of our babies. It sounds like you're doing everything right here, and that your vet has a good plan. Are you confident in your vet's ortho skills...? If not, you could always get a 2nd opinion.

| I know what you are going through! My little guy broke his front leg at 10 months old. I wasn't as lucky though. It wasn't a clean break and it was both bones in the leg (ulna and radius). So mine had to have surgery, casting wasn't even an option. If your vet is confident that it is a clean break and will heal with just a cast then I would give it a shot. I had 2 diff vet opinions and both told me surgery was the only option for my guy. It's important though to limit the jumping (in his crate I mean). Even though he seems like he's not in pain, it could delay the healing process. I carried my little guy everywhere after surgery. He had very limited down time bc it was only an 80% chance of it healing properly bc the bones are so tiny and they had to place pins through. At such a young age the bones heal rather quickly and as long as they stay in place he should heal fine. If you are very doubtful then you could have a second vet view the X-ray for peace of mind. Best of luck and keep us updated! |

| So sorry to hear about the accident. Your poor little baby. He's absolutely gorgeous!! That face!! As a precaution, I also would probably want a second opinion, as the function of his legs is super important for the rest of his life - wouldn't want it to heal improperly and have issues in the future...

| Thank you everyone, I am going in next Friday for a cast change and I am going to get copies of his xrays to send to an ortho surgeon. I pray it will heal. We just adopted 4 human babies so our financial situation is very strained. I am also going to have them cut his hair while he is under for cast change because he is matting up FAST and I can't do anything about it. |

I hope you're prepared for how most Yorkies don't do well with toddlers/children. Can't say I'm not worried. I didn't even know you can adopt that many human babies all at once, especially if you're financially strained. Sorry, don't mean to sound judgmental - I'm all for adopting children, it's great. It's just that FOUR sounds like a lot. You're going to be financially strained for another 18 years times four! Hope you have a emergency fund in case your Yorkie needs it too...

We are very fortunate and raise all 7 kids on our own and thankful everyday we don't need any type of assistance We are very blessed for sure. I love the fact that I can work from home and be here for my Parker to help his leg heal. This would be very hard if I worked outside the home. Also, I didn't take offense to your post, most people are surprised when I tell them our story. 10 years ago I would have been shocked as well. | |

| Parker is on his last cast this week. We find out next week what the verdict is after he gets his last x-ray. We are going on vacation next week for 4 days also so if he needs surgery the vet wants to do so while we are gone. He is also scheduled for neuter that week so he gets to spend the five days with a babysitter/nanny from the vet. I am so thankful for my vet friends. My older yorkie as well as my Persian cats will be with the vet nanny as well. This will be the first time I haven't taken my yorkies with me on a trip so I am unsure how I will manage. I've not spent a day apart from them since they were puppies. |
