| 7 week old pup "took a turn for the worse"?!? I am so worried. :-( I have had a deposit on a little female Yorkie since just after she was born. I have been following her progress and watching her grow via weekly photos and occasional videos. She has been seemingly healthy and well. She already has a place in my heart and I can not wait to bring her home. I just received a message that my pup has suddenly taken a turn for the worse and they will keep me posted. What in the world could this be? I have messaged back but am not hearing anything and I am so upset. Please pray for my sweet girl! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh no, I so hope this little baby will be okay! As for what's wrong...gosh...could be anything...liver shunt, heart issue, congenital something...

| Thank you for the response, Wylie's Mom. Sadly, my girl passed away last night along with at least one of her litter mates. Last I heard from the breeder, they had lost two of the girls and were expecting the last one to pass away soon. I am just so upset. I don't understand what could cause these three seemingly healthy, happy puppies to suddenly pass away. Breeder says they were all fine when he went to work and he returned home to find that all the puppies were not doing well. Says he thinks the mom may be neglecting them and she is starting to run out of milk. She is a first time mother and she seems to not want to stay still for them to nurse. They were 7 weeks old yesterday. Seems hard to believe that they can just take such a bad turn literally overnight when so many puppies are sent home with new owners at 8 weeks. I was not going to pick her up until she was 12 weeks but I know many do not wait. I have had 4 Yorkies but now feel so nervous about a new pup. Is this not uncommon? I am so very thankful that I had not told my boys about his pup. I had planned for her to be a surprise. They are desperate to add another Yorkie girl to our family. Thank goodness I do not have to tell them such heartbreaking news. |

| I will now be looking for a healthy, happy pup from a reputable breeder in the northwest Indiana or southwest Michigan area. |

| At 7 weeks they should be eating puppy food....sounds more like it was a congenital issue or they got parvo or something from not being cared for by the breeder....sorry if that sounds harsh but it's kind of strange....

| I am very sorry for the pain you are going through. Even though you never held them you can't help but to start develop a bond. Having read all the horror stories of people being cheated by unscrupulous jerks I have to ask - did you get your deposit back?

| I thought they would have been eating food at 7 weeks but I have certainly never done any breeding so? I asked the breeder and he said they start slowly at 6 weeks with soft food and are not fully weaned until 8 weeks. This just seems so bizarre to me. By 7 weeks, I assumed they would be fairly stable. Obviously, they need to eat regularly to avoid Hypoglycemia but it is my understanding that as long as you are paying attention and catch it fairly early, the blood sugar drops are pretty easily remedied with Nutrical or the like. This is being reported as being a complete turnaround overnight. They are blaming it entirely on the mama dog and say they will not be breeding her again. I did get my deposit back, thankfully. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It could very well be the Mommas fault but at least the breeder should be doing a necropsy on one of the pups. Failure to thrive is something that often (but not always can be noticed) - for eg what did the daily weighing in of each puppy tell the breeder about weight gain? Was it stable and constant? What were their activity levels and did they progress normally through the stages of puppy growth? A simple question is the breeder knew your pup and at least one other was not doing well the day before - why then did he go to work the next day - without someone in place at home to respond to an emergency???

| How terrible for you, so sorry. It is strange that 7 week old pups would die. 7 weeks their teeth are coming in, moms are not letting puppies nurse. I am also thinking along the line of parvo as chickensmith wrote. If it was parvo or anything contagious this breeder would never let anyone know, her business would be trashed if the word spread. The bonding process starts the moment you set eyes on the puppy, getting weekly up dates and pictures all add to that bond, so very sorry you had to go through this and yes it was very wise of you to hold from your boys about the new addition, how heart breaking it would have been for them. Good luck on your quest to finding another baby. (((hugs)))

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I am so sorry for this loss. Be very careful who you deal with. Some breeders are in it just for the money. Have you thought about rescuing a yorkie. Pet Adoption - Search dogs or cats near you. Adopt a Pet Today. Pictures of dogs and cats who need a home. Search by breed, age, size and color. Adopt a dog, Adopt a cat. you will see some darling yorkies who need a loving home. My next dog will be a rescue yorkie. Prayers for you as you look for a new friend and companion. |

| Thanks for all the kind words. Today has been a tough day. Ridiculous how attached I was without ever even holding her. I'm just so sad for her. If it was parvo, breeder is going to have a mess in his hands as there are other litters in the house. I saw he posted the mama for sale. I feel sorry for that mama, too. She just lost her puppies and now she is being rehomed. Poor pup. Is it likely she would carry parvo? I would consider buying her but I have another yorkie girl, age 6, and I don't want to expose her to anything. Or I could wait and find a new pup. I just don't know. |

| If it is parvo she may be infected, however, I'd call your vet and ask. If both dogs are vaccinated it might be okay. Talk to your vet- I think it would be great if you got her. |

| I figured it would be okay since the adults have been vaccinated but I am worried about what may have caused the loss of the pups. Is it a genetic issue that the mama has? I feel terrible for her and she is a beautiful dog but I worry about bringing a dog into our lives and something happening to her. My boys would be devastated. Then again, if I go through a rescue or something, I have the same risk. There are no guarantees. I was so ready to add another little girl but I am feeling so nervous about the whole thing now. :-( And I just can't help but feel bad for that poor mama. |
