I agree....seniors are wonderful and people DO lose out by dumping them.
Toby is a sweetheart...I have a feeling he may just find a home; but if not, the foster home he is going to will love him .. she loves seniors!

Toby goes for his dental tomorrow. I am a bit concerned that he may have collapsing trachea...he has an occastional cough. Hopefully it won't be an issue after the dental. His teeth are dreadful...he has to have them taken care of. He has been on clindamycin for a few days now.

He is going to the ophthalmologist on Monday...

Just took a couple photos of him after his bath...such a sweetheart...

Toby lost all of his teeth, but he doesn't seem fazed by it. He has been eating like a little piggy! My guess is he feels better...those teeth were some of the worst I have ever seen. I imagine his mouth felt awful and now is much better. Of course I do have him on Metacam and Tramadol.

He goes to Gulf Coast Vet Specialists in Houston on Monday for his opthalmology exam

Yes, yes, yes... When those teeth are rotten, infected & hurting it's amazing how they don't miss them when they are gone. They bounce rite back & start putting on weight immediately & start acting puppy-like again even when they are blind and/or deaf. These little seniors have spent their whole lives giving their all to their humans & to end up in this shape, it just kills me, uhg! This is how my lillymae was when she came to me. The only thing holding in her teeth was huge chunks of tarter & the stench coming from her mouth permeated my whole house with the smell of death, it was horrible. After she got them all out, she was 9 yrs going on 6 mo.

Toby saw the opthalmologist today. She said that he had considerable pain for some time in the past and still has some in that left eye. This poor pup... painful eyes and teeth. I wish the same and worse to the fools who allowed him to suffer like that.

I am copying parts of the report below as it is easier than to try to explain it all:

OPHTHALMIC EXAM DESCRIPTION:
OD: Comfortable; phthisis bulbi; mild conjunctival hyperemia; diffuse corneal fibrosis and vascularization;
no stain uptake; shallow AC; no flare; diffuse posterior synechiae; hypermature cataract; unable to
visualize posterior segment.
OS: Comfortable; mild buphthalmia; no stain uptake; superficial corneal fibrosis; ghost vessels; 2+ flare;
mydriatic; posterior lens luxation and hypermature cataract; fibrin strand from anterior vitreous to superior
endothelium; rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Hypermature cataracts OU
2. Phthisis bulbi OD
3. Lens luxation with secondary anterior uveitis OS
4. Retinal detachment OS
ASSESSMENT:
Toby is so sweet! Thank you for bringing him in to see us. As you know Toby is blind in both eyes. His
ocular disease is very chronic, and at some time in the past, he likely had uncontrolled glaucoma (high
pressures). Today, his intraocular pressures are normal, but he has persistent intraocular inflammation in
his left eye. Therefore, we are going to put Toby on a topical anti-inflammatory medication to maintain his
comfort and minimize any ongoing inflammation. Please let us know if Toby seems irritated following
administration of this medication.


As above, he has anti-inflammatory eye drops for his left eye which she said is causing some discomfort. The hope is to reduce the inflammation and hopefully avoid having to do an enucleation. The thought of that makes me sick.

He acts like he has not a care in the world....just a sweetheart of a pup.

Poor guy, Glaucoma is one of the most painful things a dog can go through & I'm surprised that with no treatment, they didn't burst as is the case very often. If the meds don't work they may try other meds & if they don't work then they will remove the eye/s. Again just like with those nasty painful teeth, he will not miss them & it sounds like he's not able to see anything at all now anyways. I know it sounds horrible but I promise it's really not as bad as it sounds & he will just feel that much better afterwards. My Gracie came home after her removal with a cast on her front leg & a cone on her little head & ran & rolled all over the yard the same day of surgery. She was just so happy to get rid of that horrible pain in her sweet little head. Do you remember Lou's Cassy ? She had the same thing & it was causing her so much pain & she was a diff dog after the removal of that eye & remained happy & comfy till near the very end of her life. Whatever happens he will do well & you will once again be in awe at the courage of a senior dog.

Oh, thanks for asking! He is doing very well!! His eye responded to the anti inflammatory drops so there will not be a need to enucleate. Thank God...I hate seeing that done. She said that unless he has other issues, he does not need another eye exam for six months.

He gets around my house really well and is a sweet boy. He knows the routine here already and is standing and waiting in the morning to go outside to do his business. He should train some of my others. LOL

Too funny! How sweet that he lines up and knows his way around. Toby is adorable. Happy to hear he is doing very well.

He really is adorable. I wish I had known him when he was young...I think of that often when I am with him. He is just such a sweetie. I cannot comprehend how
those people gave him up like that.

Oh such good news. I'll be Praying that the meds keep working & he can have a few more good yrs. I'm sure he will now, with the proper medical care & lots of lovin he will have.

Thanks! I think he will. His lab work looks really good. The only thing was a slightly elevated BUN. We will recheck it soon.
