| Please HELP..Yorkie hind legs stopped working Hello Everyone, My seven year old Yorkie Sonny hind legs stopped working yesterday. I called the vet and they said they didn't have any appointments available. I took him to a 24 hour pet hospital. He took x Rays and nothing was broken. The doctor stated he hurt his back. She said that she could do medical treatments or he needed surgery. However, I took him to my vet today. The vet gave him some prednisone and said to keep him in the crate. Only take him out of the crate to take him outside to urinate. I will have to help him urniate. He said that he is a good candidate for surgery and that he would have to refer me. He want to see him back in two weeks. I love Sonny so much and don't know what to do. It's very hard to see him like this. Someone please help me... What else can I do? |

| So sorry about Sonny. Was there a diagnosis? It puzzles me how they could recommend surgery if they didn't identify the cause. I would definitely get the referral to a board certified specialist.

| I would try the medications and crate rest first before agreeing to surgery, unless you have a definite diagnosis. My in-laws' schnoodle got into a fight with their bulldog a few years ago when she was about 8 and her back legs stopped working all together as well. They had to carry her in and out of the house and they thought she was paralyzed. the vet put her on crate rest and muscle relaxers and now she is 11 years old and is walking around fine. The end diagnosis was that she had pinched a nerve and then the way she twisted also caused inflammation, so her legs were paralyzed but within a week or so she was back to being able to walk. Obviously if there is a different diagnosis/reason they are saying surgery this may not be the case but my mother-in-law's vet wanted to see if rest would help and in her case it thankfully did. Sending lots of well wishes to you and your baby! |

| I think I would talk to a specialist. I have heard that sometimes waiting can make it harder to do surgery.

| Sometimes this is caused by a nerve getting pinched by the vertebrae and with some rest, the swelling goes down and there is no need for surgery, sometimes surgery is the only answer. I would still get a second opinion to see what is going on.

| I would definitely get a second opinion! Crate rest and meds might be in order, but I would want to hear that from a specialist. You can find a neurologist at: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home Do you know if he has a deep pain sensation? That is extremely important information. Once they get past a certain point, surgery will not help them recover. Best wishes and please let us know how things go.

YT Addict | This seems VERY similar to what I am dealing with now, you can read through my thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ml#post4571217 From what I was told - you need to make sure they have "superficial" and "deep" pain - superficial is pinching their skin to see if they react, and deep pain is if they respond to pinching the actual bone. Maddie lost superficial pain, and that is when I had to make an emergency trip for surgery last night... But I WILL say that I was told by my vet and a specialist there is a certain "window" for back issues and surgery, if you wait too long there can be irreversible damage - look into IVDD in dogs. For my cocker, she had to have surgery this morning and they are saying she may only have a 50/50 chance of walking again.... so I would definitely make sure on this one. And like others have said, some are find with strict crate rest, but others have to have surgery... so sorry you're going through this. |

| I would go to a neurologist for some answers. Did they do xrays or a ct on the leg area? |
