| Chaucer having tummy issues End of November Chaucer started smacking his lips like he was thirsty. I do it all the time, so I didn't think too much of it - he has 3 water bowls throughout the apartment. Finally, last week I took him to the vet to make sure he wasn't having some dental issues or anything. Vet said his teeth were fine, that he may have an upset stomach, to put him on probiotics and maybe try like 1/4 of a pecid. However, other than smacking his lips and burping, he was fine by the time we had actually arrived at the vet. This week he's been having some soft stools (in the house ), and today he's just not been himself. He woke me up yesterday, very early because he had got down off the bed and needed help up (but had no accident), today he did the same thing, but had an accident on the bathroom floor. I've made sure the guys downstairs are not going to give them anymore of their treats - and I'm making him some chicken and rice tonight. I gave him pepto as soon as I got up with him, took him out and checked the mail - probiotics were in, so he got that and 1/4 of a 10 mg pecid. I do not remember the vet saying to give him more than 1/4 a day - doesn't anyone know. I think he has acid reflux from what I've been reading, I'll call the vet on Monday to ask him about it, especially if Chaucer is still not himself. Thanks! |

| He seems to be doing much better today - I have not given him any more of the Pepcid, we've got him on probiotics now and he did eat the chicken and rice yesterday. He slept through the night, so not surprises this morning! |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Sounds like a food issue. What are you feeding him? I only feed wellness and one small treat. No fatty chicken like the Costco brand. Some yorker have sensitive stomachs and you do not want pancreatitis. My one Yorkie is now on hills zd diet because of stomach issues. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | To me, this sounds like reflux w/ the smacking and licking - this is usually treated w/ either Pepcid or Reglan. He could also have IBD/IBS in addition though. Did you change foods or anything?

| Thank you, ladies, for your reply! Chaucer didn't start getting chicken and rice, until he got sick, but I buy pasture raised, organic chicken. That being said, in the past, when I would boil chicken, I use to give him some of the skin - which after some of the stuff I've read, I will not be doing any further. He eats Wellness Core No Grain for Small Breed, and has for years. The only thing that varies is our doorman gives him treats - which I've told them I will start providing them with something to give to him. Wylie's Mom - from what I've read, I think with the smacking/licking/burping he's been doing since November, that reflux sounds like the probable culprit. I've looked at what could have changed: 1. We moved nearly a year ago, one of the doormen passes out treats to the dogs in the building - but even though they get a specific type, I'm not sure of the brand, or if they are consistent with that. 2. When we moved, last April, we moved to the city. It is possible he's picked up something people have dropped. I told my husband that I'm considering a muzzle for him so he doesn't eat something off the ground that might have xylitol in it - that stuff scares me, now that I know about it. 3. We stopped using a harness and leash and started using this leash that goes around his neck. So I've stopped the treats from downstairs, and I've ordered a Buddy Belt BB2 Dog Harness to start using. I'm gave him 1/4 of a Pepcid the other day, and we now have him on probiotics, like the vet suggested. Will he need to take the Pecid daily? I'm guess I'll need to speak with the vet tomorrow - find out if it is something he has to have long term, or if we can try the probiotics for a while and see how he does. I also want to know if we should doing the homemade food everyday with him eating his dry food as well, or if it should be something that is only once in a while (the stuff I make). I followed the recipe for the homemade dog food - have the supplement powder ingredients now as well. |
