| Protein Losing Enteropathy Hi All - I am new to this site. I have a 4 year old neutered male yorkie. He is the apple of my eye. His name is Lil man. I have had a lot of ups and downs with Lil mans health - he has Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I recently had him in for check up - blood work- up - dental cleaning. His blood work up came back with low b12 vitamin and non existent b9 (folic acid). so we are getting injections for b12 and taking folic acid orally. He is currently on budesonide - coticosteriod steriod (ugg - dont like) every other day. Vet said he now had Protein Losing enteropathy. Has anybody else had to deal with this? Any help suggestions diet, supplements greatly appreciated. Thank you PS:I am new to this forum stuff excuse me if I don't do something post etc correctly - i will get hang of it soon i'm sure. |

| Hello and welcome to YT. I am sorry your boy has this, but take heart, many pups do very well. My Cookie has IBD and PLE (lymphangectasia). She was diagnosed in Dec. 2011 and is doing very well. As for the steroid, it is very, very important! I understand your concern, but this is a very serious condition and if your vet feels he needs it, then he does!! I was told at first that Cookie would be on prednisone for the rest of her life. The dose was gradually reduced as she continued to show improvement in her albumin levels but then for somet time was on a low dose every other day. She has finally been taken off of it because she has done so well for so long. The main thing (other than the medication) is diet. Proper diet is the key to these pups doing well. I was going to consider RC low fat diet but then, after speaking at length with the internal med specialist, decided to do a consult with a vet nutritionist. She is still on that diet and is doing very well. You can find a nutritionist at: American College of Veterinary Nutrition Here is a link to Cookie's story: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html Feel free to message me if you have any questions or just need to talk with someone.

| Hi lady jane, thank you for responding to my post so quickly. This is all new to me. I have been reading up on protein losing enteropathy and feel overwhelmed. My vet suggested enzymes??? I'm still trying to figure out diet as he is a very picky eater and I try my hardest not to give into him and give him whatever he wants cause I feel better he ate. Is the goal high protein low fat? Any enlightenment on diet would be much appreciated as I don't want him malnourished and feel he's headed that way. I'm glad I joined this forum and sure I will learn much from all who have gone through the same thing I'm dealing with. I will post more as I get more info. Thanks again. |

I would not give any enzymes myself....never had to do that with Cookie and never heard of it for PLN. It is overwhelming at first. I was a basket case because it used to be pretty much a death sentence. I did not realize just how far they have come in understanding and treating it. I have since met others whose pups have PLE and are doing just fine! At first, I ran Cookie to the vet so many times to have her blood work done...all she had to do was look weird and I was off to the vet. I have since calmed down. LOL All I can say is that it does get easier.
