I would definitely get her off that purina and put her on either a venison base food or a high quality food. I feed mine Wellness Complete Balance it is a chicken and oatmeal base food. Recommended by a friend who shows poodles. I have been happy with it. I buy the chicken stew and flavor it with a teeny bit of the stew.Hope this helps!
I tried the Wellness CORE when she was smaller and she didn't like it at all.

Yup -- then it is indeed allergies. The cardinal sign for allergies in dogs is paw chewing and licking. It sounds like it's to the point where it's affecting her quality of life...so I'd get her on one of the prescription meds asap. Changing food won't really do anything as it's almost never food allergies...it's enviro/pollens/dust etcetera.

Are you using any kind of oral flea treatment?? I was using comfortis and then trifexis on Addy. I use to think the products were great until I realized that they maybe the problem with Addy's constant itching, instead of allergies. I quit using the products and put her on Nexgard . She has not been scratching and itching since.

I had been giving her all kinds of prescription medicines for several years for all the itching .....now I don't need to. She also had hair loss and now she is getting all her hair back.

If anybody is having itching and hair loss with their dog and they are taking either comfortis or trifexis you might try taking them off these products.

It worked for Addy!!

Trifexis can be deadly for dogs hundreds have died on it.

So take her to the vet and have her tested?

The only flea treatments I have used on her is OFF that you pour in bath water and I've only used it maybe 3 times. She has never had fleas because I can't take her outside very often.

Not fun watching our furbaby's feeling unwell and not knowing what is causing it. Through other people's trials and tribulations, I hope that gives you direction to what it could possibly be. I hope that your sweet baby girl is feeling better these days. Any updates?? Sending positive thoughts her way.

I started giving her half of a benadryl almost a week ago but it doesn't seem to help. I got her some new food that is grain free, it's Pure Balance, but I'm not sure if she likes it or not. She's so picky now because of my parents always wanting to feed her whatever they want and they never listen to me. I just don't know what else to do if none of this works.

You don't necessarily *have* to do allergy testing and shots, it's just one of the options. My suggestion would be to get her on some good effective meds like Atopica or Apoquel if they're year round allergies. If seasonal, then you can consider Temaril-P or steroids.

I honestly wouldn't bother w/ Benadryl - usually, it doesn't work well for most allergy dogs and secondly, it has to be given 4x a day to be effective. Other OTC meds you could try are the 1x a day ones like Zyrtec or Claritin...but again, those don't usually work well in true allergy dogs.

If you're considering the testing, most def go to a Vet Derm for it!

My friend's Shih Tzu has major allergies and benadryl works for her so I decided I would at least try it. Are the ones you mentioned prescribed? And I don't know if it is seasonal or not..she just turned 1 in July. Someone also told me it's possible that her heat cycle could have started it but she's been out of heat for a few weeks, maybe about a month now.

What is OFF and could that be causing a problem?

Default Allergies

I have a 10 1/2 year old who has had allergies to mold, pollen just about everything but food. He has chews himself so bad that he has had skin infections and required shots from the vet and he is perpetually on some medication apoquel when it's available & atopica as well as steroids when it's really bad. We monitor him based on the weather and his daily scratching. We have spent thousands and nothing else has ever worked. Good luck I hope you have a better time dealing with it than we have.

OFF, like the brand of spray you can get to repel bugs from your skin when you're outside. I had no idea what kind to get so I tried that one. I haven't used it in about 2 months so I don't think that's the problem.

No - those are OTC anti-histamines recommended by Vet Derms. I'll attach the dosages from my actual Vet Derm's sheet for you (this sheet was created by them, not me). If you try one, the derms say to try it for at leas 10 days to evaluate effectiveness, before switching to another one.

Have you tried allergy testing and shots and/or sublingual drops?
