Itching ALL the time?!
 
My yorkie is all the time scratching/digging and I can't figure out why! It's been going on for a little while. I've tried a few different shampoos and conditioners and even coconut oil and nothing seems to help. I've used oatmeal shampoos and the last kind I got was Top Paw from PetSmart, the same kind they use on her when they groom her. She doesn't have fleas or dry/flaky skin. They even said at PetSmart the last time I took her, which was about 6-8 weeks ago, that her skin was very healthy. Does anyone else have this problem with their yorkie?

Check the ingredients in her food and treats. If the main ingredient is a grain such as corn, food allergy is a possibility. Look for a food that has a protein as the main source. I hope the itching stops, poor little one.

I noticed Winnie itching a lot when her hair was tangled...I thought maybe it was pulling on her skin...honestly now that I have her hair brushing under control she doesn't itch any more. Just an occasional puppy scratch!

Could very well be allergies. Is she chewing and/or licking her paws?

First, stop the oatmeal shampoo immediately, and ask your groomer not to use it. It's a myth/fallacy that it helps w/ skin/itchies. Vet Dermatologists tell you to never use it. Use a mild shampoo and/or use one for skin issues like Duoxo (get on Amazon).

Just thought I'd say a bit what happened to my yorkie. My Bailey was scratching and biting himself so much that his behind was almost hairless. He looked like he was wearing mukluks! I did finally take him to the vets and he was given a shot of anti-histamine and he got better. The scratching stopped. I was so glad, as it was hard to see him chewing himself a lot! I also changed his food, as the food he was getting was corn based:( Changed him over to Blue Buffalo and all is better:) It was because of the awesome members here that I found great info!!!! Oh, just to add a bit more here - just recently Bailey was scratching and biting himself a bit again, and I gave him Benedryl for a few days and it worked... no more scratching/itching. As they only require a small amount, please check into a search here for the amount. Hope your sweetie gets better.

Yup my dog itches a lot. I got him at 14 weeks old and he was itching then. I tried changing his food to no grain. I give him claratin. Now that the fall is here he does not itch as much but he still does itch. It is so hard to figure out what is causing it. It can be so many things. Food, environmental, something in the house. It is very frustrating.

I'm sure it's allergies and it is something you need to talk to your vet about.

Thank you all so much for all the info! The shampoo i'm using doesn't have oatmeal. I've been feeding her Chef Michael's from Purina. She's a very picky eater. I've tried a few different kinds from PetSmart but she doesn't seem to like anything I get from there and I live almost 2 hours away so I can't just go whenever and try something new. The first ingredients in the Chef Michael's is beef, soybean meal, soy flour, animal fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (form of vitamin e), brewers rice, soy protein concentrate, corn gluten meal, ground yellow corn... Would any of those be part of the problem?

She chews on her paws a lot. I haven't noticed much licking. I think she's starting to pull some out..I see tiny balls of hair a lot laying around.

Purina was the makers of the waggin train chicken jerky that was linked to hundreds of dog deaths and hundreds of sick dogs and it took them years to pull it. There beneful food as also been linked to deaths and sick dogs. I don't trust them. Food allergies are pretty rare more then likely it's environmental. You should go to the vet. Constant itching is miserable.

That is so horrible! And it's so hard to decide on what food to buy her, whether it be the health/nutrition part of it or whether or not she'll even eat it. Whenever I actually do get to go to PetSmart, I go up and down the food aisles forever trying to figure out what would be ok. That stresses me out so much lol.

First the shampoo. I use Hy-lyte that I get from my vet. You may get this from an on line company. Use only hypo allergic shampoo. I would not use that other stuff. Now the food. I would definitely get her off that purina and put her on either a venison base food or a high quality food. I feed mine Wellness Complete Balance it is a chicken and oatmeal base food. Recommended by a friend who shows poodles. I have been happy with it. I buy the chicken stew and flavor it with a teeny bit of the stew.Hope this helps!
