| Demodectic Mange My dog has demodectic mange. It looks like a ring work on a localized area and all of the hair on the infected area has fallen ( according to the vet it is hereditary and acquired from the mom has anyone here experienced this and what is the medication given? Our vet recommended shots every week for 6 weeks and a medicated shampoo for twice a week bath. Please share your experience if your dog had this mite. Thanks

| What a relief! is it an easy to cure type of skin disease? Im also glad that it was just localized in one area. How long before chachi was cured?

| I have dealt with it with foster dogs before, most recently a Bullmastiff. The more research I did, the more I was personally against shots and dips for minor cases. There is a very safe and effective home treatment using hydrogen peroxide, Borax detergent booster and water. I know it sounds weird, and possibly intimidating, it is very, very safe and may be worth a try before trying toxic dips. The technique can easily be found on the web. |

| Also...it is very common. ALL dogs carry the demodectic mites, but pups and dogs with weaker immune systems just have a hard time fighting off the mites, so they begin to show symptoms. |

| The vet is giving him ivermectin shots. He only has 1 patch. Is this too much? Will he be able to recover from this?

| I'm by no means an expert, just read some things. Personally, for just one spot, I would try home treatment first. Chances are the medicine won't harm him, but with such a minor case, I'd err on the side of caution. If it continued to spread, then I would seek more aggressive treatment. My last foster had at least fifteen small patches and I was able to clear it with the solution described above within two months, doing treating baths every week. |

This has worked for us, along with good food, 2x monthly baths(gentle shampoo), eye washes(just to keep the eye area clean along with some meds for his eye condition). While puppies that have an undeveloped immune system do usually contract this from the Mother, in older dogs it is thought that their immune system is depressed. Good luck with your puppy

Also, OP...go grain free, yeast free if at all possible because the mites thrive on them. | |
