No dont listen to this advice please. Treat it now with what your vet has prescribed. It sounds like it isnt that bad right now but it could quickly spread, It covered all of his back and he had open wounds before the vet discovered it was mites and he got the correct treatment, You are doing the right thing. If there were any side effects from the meds you would have already seen them and the effects of mange are more dangerous if untreated than any med. It took chachi about 5 dips before he was mite free but again his case sounds alot worse than yours
