| puppy fell today/shock (long) I am just beside myself. My 10 wk old yorkie male and I were going out to porch for our daily playtime late yesterday afternoon. Somehow he fell out/squirmed of my arms onto a thin mat on our tile floor as I was going to put him down. It was so fast I can not figure out what happened. I have been so careful since his arrival. He immediately went into shock and I rushed to the car and the emergency vet. Right after fall, his body was stiff and cooler. Eyes glazed and tongue white. I wrapped him in a blanket and sat him on my lap petting him. Several minutes into the ride, which was over 30 min in traffic, he came to. Im not sure he was totally out because his eyes were open most of the time. I tried to keep him up in case of a head injury. While waiting to see a vet (I was upset we had to wait) I put him on floor on his blanket and he could stand and walk a few steps. The vet gave him a very thorough exam and there are no broken bones. His pupils were even and dilated properly. His tongue returned to its perfect puppy pink. As the visit went on, he started walking more and looking like he was feeling better. We came home and he was eating, drinking, walking but absolutely silent. He was sleepy which is normal for 9-10pm anyway. I have been up all night monitoring him in case of head injury/concussion. He is using his pee pad and had a BM after eating. He's slept his crate snuggled in his blanket. He went in there voluntarily tonight without a peep. I plan on taking him to our vet in the morning for a follow-up visit just to double check how he's doing. Ive taken off work and we're going to have a day of snuggles and quiet. Now I need to pull myself together. I cry every time I see him, talk about it with my family or think about what happened. I don't want him to sense my sadness but I am sure he does. This has been therapeutic for me just to type this out. My husband actually relieved me and he has the puppy with him on the couch and they are sleeping. I'll post a follow-up tomorrow after our vet visit. Thanks for listening. |

| Oh my goodness. Did the ER vet do anything other than a physical exam? X-ray or anything?? I hope your baby is ok and gets a good check out from your regular vet. Please do update when you return. I think you will feel better once your vet sees him.

| We're going to see our vet tomorrow. They said unless we see a decline in his behavior, that we'll use today as a rest day and do a follow-up visit tomorrow. I read the emergency vet report and it is very thorough so I think that's the best plan for today. He's mobile, eating/drinking, engaging in play, walking, running, giving kisses. The only change is that he's more quiet. He's trying to chew things which is am improvement from yesterday and has even yelped a few times wanting out of his play pen area. I think he's coming around. And mom is too.... |

| Please dont beat yourself up tooooooo much....we drop them, we step on them, we kick them, we roll over on them while napping, they fall off beds and couches and chairs.....all accidents.....you can only try to "fly ahead" of them, ie., try to see a worse case event in any situation, and then try to avoid it! They will quickly and effortlessly jump readidly from a bed or couch or chair....I encourage all my new owners to not let go of them for a second when they are up on furniture with them....I try to convey the thought these are like a little human baby, and have the same propensity to get hurt that a new born baby does....I try to equate it to a new born human baby since that is easier to relate to, along with things we do or dont do with our own enfants....we always keep a hand on them when they are on any elevated surface....we would never place our enfants on the kitchen counter and then leave them unattended for fear they would squirm around and fall to the floor. A puppy will do the very same thing, from any surface, so keep that in mind. All you can do is try to see disasters before they can happen, dont put anything past that pups capabilities to get into trouble, and pray alot! It happens to all of us.....and your baby is fine now. All you can do is try to get and stay ahead of them! You got medical care for baby immediately, and you are following up with medical care.....you are doing just fine! (I always keep my thumb and forefinger clasped around a front leg when I am holding those wiggle worms in my arms or in my hands!) |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sorry you have started off with a scary accident, but I am so happy you took the proper action.... going immediately to the vet, and also following up with observation and recheck. They are so squirmy and fast, these things do happen. Hopefully he will be fine, but you will always remember this. I'm sure you will forever be cautious in letting others pick him up, so make sure they are sitting when holding him (especially children). Good luck, and keep us updated. Hope he makes a full recovery. When you can relax a bit, do tell us more about your little guy.
