I have one litter of puppies in the master bath now, other 2 litters in seperate bedrooms. I could also put the puppies in the sunroom in seperate x pens. They would the be at the opposite end of the house but still isolated from the others. We really think that the parvo came from 2 boxer mix puppies from another rescue. We've known the lady that brought them to us for years. Her mother runs another rescue, mainly cats. She didn't want to see the dogs put down so she ask us to take them. She'd had them for a little over a week and had given them their first shots (she's also a vet tech). She didn't tell us until another litter had parvo that they "may have been exposed". So far I know of 5 other puppies who've contracted parvo. We WILL NOT be dealing with her at all in the future. Her heart may of been in the right place but her negligence and outright stupididy caused 3 puppies to die, plus the origional boxer mix puppies. I don't know about the other 2 and am afraid to ask. That doesn't include the financial cost or long term effects . |
Went to visit Piper but had to take in one of my poodle pups. He's the most active, the first to do everything but this morning didn't come to the gate to see me. Usually he's yipping ang doing his baby growls, today nothing. No vomiting or loose stools but I took him in anyway. Now he's positive. We started treatment but he's so little1.4 pounds and wont be 8 weeks until tuesday. He's had 1 neopar and was due his first 5-way next week. Piper hadn't thrown up and no diarrhea for over 24 hours so he wad given a few tiny pieces of boiled chicken which she seemed to keep down, for all of 15 min. Then vomiting and bloody stools. Hopefully everyone else stays healthy. |
Im sorry parvo is so contagious and so hard to get rid of I expected that to happen, Prayers for the pup and Piper |
I have heard of this treatment but have not actually witnessed it....you may want to research it thoroughly and see where you end up! "If the dog is caught in the early stages before it goes to the gut, the Vet should prescribe children's TAMIFLU. You will probably have to get this at the Pharmacy because I don't know of any vets that keep in on hand. Give the complete course of the medicine for the 5 days it is prescribed. It is not Clear why Tamiflu works but I know from experience it surely does. It stops the Parvo from destroying the cillia or little hairs in the intestines we believe therefore the intestines do not sluff and the secondary infections do not occur. The virus then runs it's course and My vet at the last time we spoke of parvo had not lost a single dog since he started to prescribe TAMIFLU." |
Do you think profolaxtic tamiflu would work? |
Just talked with the office and they do use it in conjunctionwith other meds. They do have a good cure rate. They said to try tamifu on other pups, their words" it might help and it won't hurt. " Going to email my Dr now. My co-pay is only $5. |
Supposedly, if they start giving it VERY soon, like with the poodle pup, it works within 24 hours! Let me look at my notes and see if I can find that file where I saved it......did they tell you dosing instructions, etc? All those babies have already been exposed to parvo....the second they exhibit the first inkling that they may have parvo, just like you did with the poodle, get them to the vet and get that Tamiflu started immediately! |
Piper and Pooh are still in the hospital. This makes 11 days for Piper and 4 for Pooh. They're finally off IV's, although in Poohs case its because they can't find any veins, he's too small. He was given some sub q fluids and they did syringe feed him some ad food. He will eat but is so young he'd only been eating solid for about a week and was still nursing on a regular basis. Piper finally started eating. I brought her some boiled chicken but she liked the ad better. She's still having bloody stools but no vomiting. I 've heard that some dogs who survive parvo have sensitive stomachs for life, has anyone experienced that? The vet still can't explain why she got parvo, and such a bad case, since she had 5 rounds of parvo vaccine. We'll be doing parvo titers after she's better and possibly distemper titers, even though she should be immune after having parvo. He thinks she could just have a poor immune system. We'll just have to wait and see, but hopefully she'll get to vome home in a few days, the puppy in 2-3 days. The rest of the puppies are doing good and the 2 oldest litters will.get their 5-wsy tomorrow, the other litter next week. The house is still essentially on lock down and has never been cleaner. We went through an entire 50 tablet container of virkon, 2 containers of trifecta and 5 gallons of bleach. Lots of work but worth it if they dogs are safe. The only adult I worry about is my 13year old golden. He's in pretty good condition but does have lymphoma so has a compromisef immune system himself. |
Im glad Piper and Pooh areee getting supportive care and seem to be doing okay so far |
I'm so glad to hear your pups are improving.....Seeing all the hard, exhausting work your doing to insure all your pups are safe says a lot about your dedication to all the pups in your care. I hope you get some relief soon from this nightmare. |
Just heard from the vet. Piper is still doing good, but stiill needs to drink and eat more. Bloody stools are decreasing. They almost lost my puppy. The idiot responsible for him last night thought he was eating enough and didn't syringe feed or give sub q fluids. My baby is surviving parvo at 7 weeks and almost dies from hypoglycemia. I'm on my way there soon. All I can say is its a good thing he's already gone for the day but I feel that I need to stay at night now.The vet and I will be having a very long talk. |
Piper came home last night. She's eating well but is still on ad diet and will be for a while. She is so skinny I'll get whatever it takes. When she went in she weighed 4.6 lbs. Now she weighs 3.4. Pooh is doing better and will eat on his ad food on his own, we haven't had to syringe feed him since yesterday morning. He might get to come home tonight. I also had to take in one of my llasha mix puppies, Cindy. Another high positive but she's already doing better. I'm getting good at recognizing the early symptoms. A skill I wish I never had to learn. |
If it were me, I would take them all to be tested and start treating anyone that shows Positive before they start showing symptoms..... |
:)Piper is home, total of 13 days in the hospital. She's eating whatever doesn't eat her first. Pooh came home the next day, a total of 5 days. Only Cindy remains but should come home monday. Nina, another poodle pup was started on the tamiflu only and is being treated at home. Within 24 hours she was playing, drinking and eating. She never had any bloody stools and only vomited 2-3 times. She looks great and is extemely po'd about being isolated. In a few days I'll put her with the other "parvo pups" when I'm sure she's ok. Everyone is on ad and seems to do well on it and a big plus is they actually like it. We'll stay on that for a week or 2 longer then switch to id. Thankfully I have a source to get it basically free otherwise their grocery bill would be higher than ours. I talked to the vet about getting everyone tested but he agrees that with the incubation period just because they're negative today doesn't mean they'll be negative tomorrow so I just watch them carefully. |
I've been following this thread, and all I can say is wow. I'm so glad the pups are doing better and I hope everyone else there manages to stay healthy. Thank you for caring for those pups. |
