| I think Lilah has kennel cough :( She's acting normally but keeps coughing. She was at the vet on Friday and I'm wondering if she picked it up there (coughing started today...just a couple times this morning and I thought it was nothing, but she's coughing a lot tonight. It keeps waking her up from her nap and she stands up to cough). She is only 4 lbs and 6 months old. I'll call the vet tomorrow to see if they want to see her. If you could just think good thoughts for her I'd appreciate it! I'm sure Magnolia (our papillon) will start with symptoms soon.... sigh |

| Poor baby. I hope she gets better soon and that your other little one doesn't catch it. I have no experience with kennel cough, so my good thoughts and prayers are all I can do to help. |

| If it is kennel cough she needs meds asap so it doesn't advance into pneumonia. I'd be taking her in first thing in the morning.

| Everything I've read online says that it often clears up on its own without medication. I'm still calling the vet in the morning though |

| I would still try to find out for sure and treat it, rather than risk it getting worse and going into pneumonia in ICU fighting for her life, as has happened to other members' dogs here. Don't let her suffer any longer than necessary, when meds could get her feeling better quicker. The online reports of it clearing up on it's own may be in much larger dogs, so always stay on the cautious side with little ones as they can get worse really fast. Good luck, and do update when you can.

| I am up this morning with my baby doing the same thing. I have been looking online and I found one vet that says to give some children's robotussin dm, half of a teaspoon. My dog was at the groomer about two weeks ago. I also read that it could be allergies, but kennel cough us usually at its worse at night. Hope this helps and hope your baby feels better. Keep us posted, I will let you know how it all ends up, I am gonna try the cough medicine first. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Was she recently given the Kennel Cough vaccine? If so, then that's where she got kennel cough. Btw, it's not a core vaccine and you don't have to get it - unless you're required to by your groomer or something. The danger in puppies is that it can easily and rapidly progress to pneumonia, whereas an adult can fight it off more easily. This is why a puppy should be seen by a vet.

| she wasn't given the kennel cough vaccine (in 25 years I have never given it unless my dog had to be boarded (once) and it was required) The strange thing is around 2 am all the coughing stopped and she is running around playing, eating, drinking this morning and not a single cough I wonder if she did have a little piece of something stuck in her throat (piece of a leaf from outside etc) or if she'll be like my kids and have her cough disappear during the day and show up at night Either way, I'm watching her like a hawk and if any coughing starts up off to the vet we go. |

| My Gina always got her bordatella shot and still got kennel cough two or three times. The vet said she was just susceptible to the virus. She was always put on meds. I don't understand this concept of letting them cough and cough and it will clear up on it's own. Bull!

| the antibiotic will only work if it's a bacterial strain.....but the vet can also give them cough suppressants, steroids etc. |

| I am not sure THAT is a gamble you may want to take. Kennel cough CAN last for months and make your pup very sick....pneumonia is a grave concern with this. The longer you wait, or if you decide to "let it clear up on its own", you are going to be watching a very miserable baby, with an annoying, sickening cough for months on end....not something I would want to sit around and watch happening to one of my babies. And of course, if you are wrong, and it goea into pneumonia, you could loose her. |

| You are correct - meds do not work on a virus. I guess kc must be bacterial.
