| Ear drops for mites- need advice Hello all! I'm new here. My puppy had his 8 week check up a few days ago & the vet found that he has ear mites. They gave me prescription drops to put in his ears (two drops twice a day for 7 days) I have a few questions about this. When I put the drops in, sometimes one of the two drops will not go all the way into his ear canal, because of his inner ear hair. I don't want to over-medicate by putting a third drop in.. so I'm wondering what you all think about this? Also, I've received conflicting advice from yorkie owners about how to handle (or NOT handle) their ears when they're this age. His ears are still flopping forward, but obviously when I put the drops in his ears, I have no choice but to lift up the ear. Will this effect how his ears grow/stand up? I've heard some people say that touching their ears when they're still formative can damage cartilage and result in problems in growth & shape of the ear. However, I've also heard other people say that it's fine. Any other advice on this ear-mite situation is VERY welcomed and greatly appreciated too!!! (Also, I very away that 8 weeks is still early for a puppy to be away from the mother, but it was necessary in this case so please be kind) |

| No worries!! Finnigan had ear mites. Our old vet missed his ear mites his first checkup, when we saw a new vet she immediately noticed the scratching., but by that time it was a severe infestation. No damage to the ear, just tons of build up and ear wax looking. The first ointment he received was very effective but made him lose hair on the outside of his ear ( because of the steroid). We then got a liquid medicine, that also helped and finished the job. We were worried because Finnigan gave us such a hard time when we put the medicine in his ear that damage would be caused however they said to get as far as you can into the ear and then massage it in for atleast 10 seconds, that helps a ton. It is VERY hard to damage the inside of the ear and ear canal since it is so far inside the ear, do not be worried. Just do the best you can with the medicine. It is messy but it doesn't take that long to rid them! |

| Thank you for sharing your story! I'm really hoping I'm getting the drops in deep enough to work. The bottle is so small and in order to know I'm dropping the right amount in, I need to be able to see the drops- its very difficult. and he haaates it |

| If you are using Revolution on your baby as heartworm preventative, this is GREAT on ear mites too, and will keep the ear mites gone after you get them cleared up. Your vet may even use Revolution inside the ear to kill the ear mites....but dont you be doing that without the vets say so! Handling babys ears will not damage the ears.....keep the hair clipped off the top 1/3 of the ear so the "load" is lightened and the ears can stand..... | I just assumed everybody did this but I tweeze the hair out of the ear. It is easy to do as it doesn't hurt and I think healthier for the ear. I have had Bichons and you have to pluck them.
