Cathy, I know how hard it is on you when you have an older dog. Every little issue could be serious and we worry so much. Prayers are going up for both of you.

Barney had his appointment with the neurologist yesterday and the news was pretty positive. It appears he is having focal seizures. In most older dogs, brain tumors are responsible for seizures but not these kinds of seizures. Usually older dogs with brain tumors have seizures involving the whole brain but Barney's seizures only involve a very small part of his brain. So it is very unlikely he has a brain tumor. The neurologist thinks Barney has late onset acquired epilepsy and that maybe a year or two ago he had a small mini stroke that caused this area of his brain to be damaged. He also doesn't think he has encephalitis. The way to know for sure is by MRI, but it's very costly. I'm not sure yet. I asked if Barney would make it through the MRI procedure and he said there's no doubt he would do great. For now, we are using meds to help with the seizures.

Good to hear the positive feedback from the neurologist. Is the medications helping? Are the seizures less frequent? The information the MRI can provide would be nice, but would it change the treatment plan? It's obviously your choice, to have the MRI done or not, but I probably wouldn't do it unless the doctor feels he could/would treat Barney differently with the findings. I feel sometimes the tests are done more for our peace of mind and less for treatment decisions. If you are not seeing improvement with his current treatment, maybe then I would proceed with the MRI to find a better treatment. Either way, I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

I am very happy to hear the positive update on Barney! Praying he continues to improve and that the med manages his problem.

I wouldn't do the MRI unless the doctor said it would change the treatment, or if Barney shows other symptoms.

Barney is having an MRI of his brain today. We felt we needed to know for sure what is going on. Keep him in your thoughts today
