Barney had his appointment with the neurologist yesterday and the news was pretty positive. It appears he is having focal seizures. In most older dogs, brain tumors are responsible for seizures but not these kinds of seizures. Usually older dogs with brain tumors have seizures involving the whole brain but Barney's seizures only involve a very small part of his brain. So it is very unlikely he has a brain tumor. The neurologist thinks Barney has late onset acquired epilepsy and that maybe a year or two ago he had a small mini stroke that caused this area of his brain to be damaged. He also doesn't think he has encephalitis. The way to know for sure is by MRI, but it's very costly. I'm not sure yet. I asked if Barney would make it through the MRI procedure and he said there's no doubt he would do great. For now, we are using meds to help with the seizures.
