| Coughing - DOn't know what to do... My puppy has had a cough since dec 12 and has has 2 different penicilian prescribed as well as cough syrup and it seemed she was getting better she has run out of medicine but now she sounds very weezy. Like she has a chest cold. My vet wants to stick a tube down her throat and draw up some of the phlem and send it away to a lab. at first he was saying she probably had kennel cough but since nothing is helping he is not sure what it is. Has any one experiences this? Should I try and get one more prescription for penicillian since it seemed as though she was getting better? Is kennel cough a dry cough or does it sound like a chest cold? Is kennel cough contagious for the entire time your dog has it? |

| Cough You have certainly been persistenly conscientious with your dog's treatment. If you have any doubts it never hurts to get a second opinion from another well respected vet in your area. I don't know if you are aware of the recent publicity in the U.S. about the "dog flu" but it has been in many of the major newspapers, on TV and written about here on YT. From what I have heard and read it has similar symptoms to kennel cough and lasts a month or longer. There is no specific cure and medicine is prescribed to treat the symptoms only. It is supposed to be very contagious and it is recommended that you seek medical attention at the first signs of the cough, just as you did. It might be worth mentioning this to your vet and getting his/her opinion on the subject. If you want to know more I'm sure you can search the threads here on YT or GOOGLE the topic "dog flu" to get more information. Good luck and let us know how your baby is doing. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had kennel cough since I got her the end of August and has been aon 4 series of antibiotics and has just stopped coughing in the past week. Her cough was very dry sounding and would mainly cough first thing in the morning and at night. I would get a scond opinion before I had a tube put down her throat. Have they done an Xray to check for pneumonia? Good luck I know it is so scary when they are sick. Also, my pom caught it from her and she is still coughin a little but is on antibiotics for aher eye problem so I'm hoping that will end her coughing too.

| We are going through the coughing also I brought Deisel home on Christmas Eve and on Christmas night he started the coughing and almost like a cat trying to cough up a hairball sound. We took him to the vet on Monday 12/26 and waited to get in. He was given Amoxi drops and a cough medicine. Today (1/2/06) we went back and he was given a refill of the cough medicine and another antibiotic. The vet went over the trachea propblem but said that since he is so young that he didn't think that the trachea was the problem. This is the first time that I have visited this site and to read everyone's messages it sounds just like our house. Getting up all night, coughing, meds and visit after visit to the vet. This is our first puppy ever and all this has scared me a little. I hope that everyone's little ones get better. Also, are greenies bad? |

| Deisel,,,That was exactly how Miikka sounded. Like she had to cough up a fur ball. She started coughing on Dec the 12 and we are on our 3 dose of medicine and sh is only coughing about once a day now. So she is a lot better. Hopefully your puppy get better soon. This is our first puppy as well so it was pretty scary and all the vet bills sure do add up fast. |

| Many members have had luck with the same thing you have with having a humidifier in the room. They need the moisture in their lungs like you do with a bad cold.
