| So sorry for your boy's illness. Limping, vomiting, diarrhea ... be sure to rule out Lyme's disease.

| Praying for poor Fletcher that the vet will be able to determine what is wrong and get him on the path to recovery.

| Fletch does not have HGE. ****phew The vet seems to think he's stressed easily and is prone to diarrhea due to nerves. His last bout of this last year was mild she said. If it were full blown HGE they would not have let me take him home. He did get anti nausea meds and subq fluids. He has a script for antibiotics for an intestinal infection. Vet took blood to test for his red blood cells, Lymes, heart worm and pancreatitis I think. I'm waiting for a call back. He has not thrown up or had diarrhea since this morning. He had a tiny bit of loose stool at the vets so they are testing that too. It was only semi soft and definitely had form, so that's good. She thinks he pulled his shoulder or strained it. He seemed sore in his shoulder. She didn't want to give him anything tho in case it upset his stomach more. So we are home, he's sleepy, but not lethargic. Everything is good! Thank god!

So happy to hear that Fletcher does not have HGE. I honestly thought it probably was not because I have never heard of a vet sending a pup home with that diagnosis. Since he has had this issue frequently and you suspect the pig's ears, I would try to not use them for a while and see if it helps. If not, I still think a further work up should be done to be sure that something else is not going on. He could have IBD which is also common in yorkies.

| I never give pigs ears.... Figures right!? Uugghh. Lol. Thanks for the support today! He's on script food for 3 days and nothing else. The last vet told me he was borderline needing hospitalization. I had to bring him in for 3 days to get subQ fluids then. I just wish the vet would call me with the bloodworm results, but I guess no news is good news right?!

| All tests came back negative. Vet truly thinks he is easily stressed and it causes stomach upset. Poor baby looks miserable, sleepy. Not lethargic, just tired, sick! Hopefully one good night of meds and sleep make a world of difference.

| I am happy to hear the bloodwork is ok. Hope he is better soon! Keep in mind that if this does happen again, you really might need to think specialist. Just because blood work is good, does not mean something is not going on. I so learned that one with Teddy Bear. Again, not saying Fletcher has a shunt, just saying that labs are great but cannot totally be relied upon. We suspect Teddy has IBD based on symptoms...the specialist does not want to scope and biopsy him so we are treating his symptoms and fortunately it is working so far. He is on Hills Z/D food and Pepcid.

| Don't laugh at me please, I'm not a dog expert. But...you know how if we (as humans) overexert ourselves whilst undergoing strenuous exercise, we can get a stitch in our sides and get upset stomachs including heaving, and the runs in worst case scenario)? Is it possible that the run was simply too much for him to handle? It seems to me on a really hot day and that much running time for that length of ground...seems like an awful lot for a tiny dog (especially given the heat and frequent stops for water intake). Excess water intake during strenuous exercise in the heat is a really big factor in side stitches. Like I said I'm not a dog expert - but I do know that when I overexert myself in the heat it really is not a pleasant result (dry heaves, limps because of stitch in the side and shin splints, etc) and diarrhea, so I've learned to take it easier the older I get. Maybe it was a bit too much exercise? When he was sick before was there a lot of exertion beforehand? Like a really long run, etc? Forgive me if this isn't my place but I'm just thinking it (might) be possible (but I don't know). Last edited by YorkOfTheShire; 07-05-2013 at 04:34 PM. |

I pray you can get to the bottom of your little one's problems. It's so hard on the dog to not get to live his great life and feel bad and it's almost as hard on the mommie sitting by and watching.

I'm an awful mommy! 2 miles is nothing for them, but I guess it was too hot. It was 84 and humid. They only walked/jogged 1.5 miles and when they seemed done I put them in the stroller. Didn't try to get them to keep going, just water and a ride immediately. But yeah, I feel awful!
