| Staph infection......again First I want to say that although I am not a regular poster on these boards, over the years I have received invaluable advice from so many of you here. So thank you all! Here is my current problem. Milo will be 11 years old in July. Since November of last year he has had a recurring staph infection on his skin (pyoderma). When this first happened, the vet did complete blood work and a skin scrape. We were given medicated shampoo and he was put on antibiotics for 10 days, but it never fully cleared up. He was then given another 21-day round of antibiotics. Everything was great and then I noticed the small scaly scabs again April. He had complete blood work done again and was given another 21-day course of antibiotics and seven days of prednisone. I also changed him to a grain free diet. He gets Fromm Game Bird in the morning and eats Nature’s Variety lamb or duck raw bites in the evening. I have also been giving him 1/4 of a Benadryl tablet every night before bed. Two days ago, I noticed the scaly patches on his skin again. His blood work has come back normal each time. He is not scratching and does not seem to be bothered in the least by these scabs. He is eating and playing normally. I have a call in to his vet, but I don’t want to keep treating him with antibiotics. At this point, I really do not feel that it is a food allergy, I think it very well be environmental. Given where we live, Sacramento, California that wouldn’t be a surprise. Allergies in this area tend to be terrible. Has anyone had any experience with this being a recurring or chronic problem? Any advice? Thanks! |

| Where are the patches -- all over or localized? Max had a few black scaly scabby spots on his belly. They weren't staph, but the vet wasn't sure what caused them. Antibiotics cleared them up, but they came back. Like you, I didn't want to keep treating with antibiotics. I applied organic coconut oil and that took care of them as quickly as antibiotics. Max's spots may have been an allergy to Bermuda grass. The spots didn't bother him or cause any itchiness. We avoid Bermuda and haven't had a problem since. It can't hurt to try the organic coconut oil. Use a good brand. I like CocoTherapy and Nutiva (available at the Vitamin Shoppe).

| The patches are all over. His neck, back and belly. I forgot to mention that I have tried the coconut oil (Nutiva) topically and it did not help. |

| Poor Milo. Sounds like a case for a doggy dermatologist. They often are able to solve cases that a regular vet cannot.

| Poor baby! I agree with Maximo. Time for your vet to refer you to a dermatologist.

| Dogs with allergies often have recurrent skin infections. Sometimes it is a matter of finding the antibiotic that works. BUT, you also need to find out what he is allergic to ...it actually is not as common for it to be a food allergy. Normally it is environmental. There are meds that can help. I agree that it may be time to seek the help of a dermatologist so that you can get to the bottom of this.

| I would watch chicken. I feed Fromm Beef because no chicken in it. It is a great feed. Even the game bird I would watch. I had a shihtzu that couldn't eat chicken. I spent a fortune at vets and even derm vet. I would try to rule out any feed with chicken and would suggest to try the grain free beef. |
