Where are the patches -- all over or localized? Max had a few black scaly scabby spots on his belly. They weren't staph, but the vet wasn't sure what caused them. Antibiotics cleared them up, but they came back. Like you, I didn't want to keep treating with antibiotics. I applied organic coconut oil and that took care of them as quickly as antibiotics.
Max's spots may have been an allergy to Bermuda grass. The spots didn't bother him or cause any itchiness. We avoid Bermuda and haven't had a problem since.
It can't hurt to try the organic coconut oil. Use a good brand. I like CocoTherapy and Nutiva (available at the Vitamin Shoppe).
