Well bless you for taking her in and trying to help her. I know the cost of vets these days. Our shih tzu was abandoned and we adopted him. He is two years old and now suffers from juvenile cataracts. The surgery is going to cost about $3500.00 but before that we have to cure his liver problem. His enzyme problem is almost cured right now but it's costing us over $500.00. So I know how you feel. I have the Care Credit card also but I think this is going to go over and above the limit on the card. Some people on this forum get a bit carried away because everybody loves their babies but for the most part this is a great forum.
Anyway our prayers go out to you and Oreo.
I agree wholeheartedly. It sounds like she has her plate full and is trying her very best to take care of her babies.

IMHO I would be very careful on taking advice on what meds to give a dog if you have no clue on what the problem. From what i was told the active ingredient in Pepto Bismal was changed a few years back and it contains aspirin, or something that is not good for dogs, my vet told me a little over a year ago not to use it. I also know that sometimes the free or cheap dog turns out to be the most expensive one

Since right before Christmas we were dealing with King's illness issues. We spent about $800 at Banfield and then found a FANTASTIC vet named Saundra Taylor closer to our home and then spent about $1400 on xrays, ultrasounds, liver biopsies, etc. No expense is too great when you love your family, I get it. He recovered and is now doing great although he has a serious seperation anxiety issue with my mother, his mother. I now have two little girl Yorkies. Mia is a 14 month old Black and Tan female and Oreo is an 11 month old Biewer Yorkie. We got them at the end of December. Mia was in great shape but the women that were responsible for Oreo felt like she was a 'runt' and wouldn't make it. They didn't vaccinate her at all. She has already had two broken legs before we got her and they set them themselves and did it crooked. She is the cutest baby in the world to me. In the start of January I underwent abdominal surgery. Then at the start of February, Oreo seemed out of sorts so I took her to the vet. After $230, x-rays and office visit with medicine, we found out we cant have her vaccinated while she is sick. Then my dad went into the hospital with total kidney failure among other things. When I said earlier that I was unable to pay the $200 dollars to get her in, it isn't because I am unwilling and I don't want to spend any time watching her suffer, I am trying to take care of her to the best of my ability. I spoke to a friends sister that is a vet and she said that i could give her a small amount of children's Benadryl to relieve her symptoms. That has worked and she isn't choking, spitting phlegm, or struggling. She is back to normal. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow to check up on her, we just want to make sure it is nothing more. I wanted to clarify that I am not trying to minimize the situation or be complacent about this issue. I appreciate all of your help and encouragement and feel thankful that there is such a thing as 'Yorkie Talk' right now!
Thanks,
Cindy

You have done a tremendous job taking care of your babies with all else that you have had on your plate and do not let anyone make you feel otherwise!! She may just have an allergy or cold. It sort of sounds like it with the Benadryl working.

She may only have something mild, but on the other hand, she may have something much more serious. As others have said, home remedies are never a good option without consulting with a vet. It is important to know dosages among other reasons not to medicate without professional advice. Guessing about a dropper here and there is not safe with little dogs. It is far to easy to overdose one.

Hopefully the OP went to the vet today as she said she was and everything is ok with her pup!

Hope you are doing okay as well. I am sorry that your plate is so full right now, too. Hope you are doing better.

Angel Skittish baby

This is sort of changing the subject but, I need some advice. I adopted a baby girl after my Roxie died. I was told she was part of a breeding nightmare. She is very skittish still. She is around two years old and was apparently just used for breeding purposes and never given much attention. She has come out of her shell alot, but doesn't want to play or play with toys. She is extremely scared of bad weather. Any suggestions anyone?

Instead of changing the topic of this thread, why not start a new one? That way you will get more responses.

Just WOW.

Besides you are giving out WRONG information on medications. My gracious there are several things you have said that would kill people's pet's or make them even sicker.

Benedryl is fine, if you're sure you're treating allergies, and your vet says to give it.

Baby Aspirin is fine if you're sure there is no internal bleeding involved, or your pup could bleed out (bleed to death).

Human antibiotics are never good for dogs or especially puppies. If you have antibiotics left over from your children, you're not treating them right as all antibiotics should be given as directed till finished, or risk creating a super strain of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics. Then you'll have a sicker child and a sick pup on your hands.

Guess I should have read ahead. You are absolutely correct.

To the OP I hope your baby is starting to feel better. I hope you were able to see a Vet today.

Default Update on Oreo

Vet went great! Oreo was seeming better when I went in with her and the vet said she had a slight fever and was most likely a cold or an allergy, unsure. She did x-rays and didn't see any blockage or anything else to worry about. I took her back home with an anti-emetic and antibiotics. She did good for the day and then last night she began the retching and vomiting mucous again. I am calling the vet again now because when I went in she wasn't doing it so it was only my description. She is so sweet and it breaks my heart to see her so tired and so down. I do have a theory kind of off-kilter and I was wondering if anyone has had this as an issue. I kept trying to think back to the day it started and if there was anything that she got into or changed. The only different thing is that I used a different laundry soap. I will tell the vet as well when I call but I am so confused on what is going on. The antibiotics she gave me is: 50 mg Metronidazole daily and Cerenia.

It may take time for the meds to work. If you can, get a video of her doing that to show the vet.

Metronidazole is a great antibiotic for the GI tract. Cerenia prevents vomiting.

So...she thinks this is all her tummy then? I don't the the "cold" diagnosis....and if she is getting meds for her tummy.....does she perhaps think a food allergy? I don't think the laundry detergent would do that, but you never know.
