| We got a second opinion - Melanoderma So this afternoon we took Milo in for a second opinion because I just wanted to be sure of what our first vet told us about the hair on his nose, feet and ears becoming very short and thin...we were told it was probably an alergy to something in his food (Acana). I had been going through pics of his all night and I realised that although he has been on Acana for about 6+ months now,the hair loss started just recently, out of the blue, like just over a month ago.So I was just not convinced that this had anything to do with his food. Anyhoo,we took him in this afternoon and we have been asured that it´s not as bad as I made it sound over the phone (I am a worried momma! lol) and that what he has is no doubt Melanoderma. I have been trying to find info on it ALL afternoon and I cant find ANYTHING We´ve been told that it´s a very mild form and that he is only affected by it in the places most common (muzzle, paws and ears) and that he will probably grow out of it before the age of 3 and the hair will grow in as normal. You have to be right in his face to really notice. It´s not an illness,he´s perfectly fine, there isnt even a treatment or prevention...but does anyone know more about this? I cant even find pictures

| I just searched the web and two things I found: Melanoderma is the overproduction of melanin in humans - I presume this is the same for dogs as I found this also: Melanoderma (hair loss [alopecia] of Yorkshire terriers)—symmetrical hair loss with darkened skin of the ears, bridge of the nose, tail, and feet I say that it is the overproduction due to the "darkened skin of the ears, bridge of the nose, tail and feet." I have never heard of this and there really don't seem to be any helpful sites out there on the internet. If I were you, I would contact the vet's office and let them know that you attempted to research it and could not find out anything on it and ask them your questions. You pay your vet for the service, knowledge and expertise and you should get the information you request. Sorry I wasn't much help - hopefully some of our other members have more knowledge on this subject.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | hmm, I found pretty much the same thing Lori but I went ahead & read this article: Hair Loss In Dogs (Canine Alopecia) | Tri-County Animal Hospital - Wayne, NJ Veterinarian It sorta sounds to me like Melanoderma may be a fancy name for hair loss. The only place I saw it mentioned was in the paragraph "Specific Locations of Hair Loss" I'm sure if we're wrong someone will come along & correct us shortly!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | The term Melanoderma means a darkening of the skin. The hair loss is Alopecia. What I found on line said there is no effective treatment available and it may or may not resolve on it's on.
