I just searched the web and two things I found:

Melanoderma is the overproduction of melanin in humans - I presume this is the same for dogs as I found this also:

Melanoderma (hair loss [alopecia] of Yorkshire terriers)—symmetrical hair loss with darkened skin of the ears, bridge of the nose, tail, and feet

I say that it is the overproduction due to the "darkened skin of the ears, bridge of the nose, tail and feet."

I have never heard of this and there really don't seem to be any helpful sites out there on the internet. If I were you, I would contact the vet's office and let them know that you attempted to research it and could not find out anything on it and ask them your questions. You pay your vet for the service, knowledge and expertise and you should get the information you request.

Sorry I wasn't much help - hopefully some of our other members have more knowledge on this subject.
