| Advice needed please Hi guys Just got a mini Yorkie three days ago he was fine first day but started to get sick and diarroreah into the second day and by today was weak and not drinking eating etc. taken him to vets and they've had him on drip all day and balanced his fluids out so he has improved but the nurse is saying he's not strong enough to leave and isn't as fit as he should be... The bill is costing me a fortune.. I don't know what to do. Spoken to few breeders and I've been told to take him home and feed him boiled chicken and rice but I'd never forgive myself if anything happened to him. I can't afford to keep him in for days... Praying he is better by the morning!!! Anyone had the same thing happen?? |

| Re: Advice needed Oh no!!! you need to keep your spirits up!! Something you will need to keep in mind is that yorkies are pretty emotional and are stressed VERY EASILY moreover finnicky eaters! With that said any changes such as: new home, travel or even weather changes could trigger your baby becoming ill. My Nella had similar issues when we first brought her home. The vet said she had a parasitic type of infection. She received antibiotics and she recovered shortly after she began the treatment. You may also want to look at an intersinal parasite called Coccidia- very common in little Yorkie pups (something that our breeder told us to monitor closely). You didn't mention her stool was bloody (which is a great thing!!) but something to look at is a further reading for you about Coccidia: Intestinal Parasite (Coccidia) in Dogs | petMD Blend foods to consider giving her: broiled lean chicken breast -no seasoning, and cooked white rice (this combo is always my 1st) baby food: yams, canned low sodium pumpkin is good for stopping diarrhea too. Good luck! Keeping your little one in my prayers. Keep us all posted. |

| Has your vet determined the cause of the problem? Are you saying that your vet recommends you putting the pup to sleep to save money?

| This is the time for you to step up and be brave, for your pup..he is dependent on you to make the best decisions and see for his care. You say you have money, ok then get that pup to another vet, preferable the er vet or a Vet School near you? I don't like the response from your vet, not one single bit and without a lot more testing, etc etc., his solution sucks, and I think hes a pisspoor excuse for a vet...just my opinion...I would and WAS the same way when they told me this about my Mini, and let me just tell you she is 8 years old and costs me tons but shes happy, she has a good quality of life and I would do it all over again. (also, said vet was fired and I took it all to the Board)....

| Well the out of hours vet that's had him today has said he's perked up a bit which is good so just waiting to see how he gets on. The other vet said he's gave me all the medicine he possibly can to fight off any infections. I'm hoping because he so small it will just take him longer than other pups to find some strength. If by Monday he's not improved and the vet wants to put him to sleep I'm going to take him to another hospital. |

| I agree...second opinion! I was so fortunate with having a WONDERFUL breeder who gave me direction and help...my "vet" was filling me all this technoterms that had me so worried that I was looking at getting a $5000 loan to get extensive testing for a puppy that crashed w hypoglycemia (spell that right???) I was willing to do whatever I needed. it was hard for me to go against my vet but that second opinion and my breeder is what saved Ms. Ruby-Sioux. Today a year later you would never know that this feisty little pipsqueak was ever sick....and her new vet gives her an extremely healthy report card! |

| I'm sorry your baby is going thru this. Don't give up. I agree with the others, this vet isn't telling you something or isn't versed enough in treatments. Please take your baby right now to an ER vet or Vet school. Needs to be done now, though. Pick yourself up, don't quit on Chip, and go do what you can do..dont' worry about hurting this vet's feelings...this is for Chip. Praying for you both!
