I'm more so wondering if kc early on is indicative of an underlying genetic issue. In humans when someone is susceptible to infections- sometimes there is an underlying condition causing this and sometimes there is not! I don't think I'll take Grim back until the breeders can say that he has completely beaten the bug he has. I couldn't bare getting him back with him still coughing after everything I've been through.
The breeders say they are taking him to get his second set of needles next week so I'm assuming that means he's doing alot better! cmonnn January 9th I want my cuddly bear back

If it were me I would make sure that I have all of the fact of the causes and long trem effects of Kennel cough and make an informed decision. If you do choose to take the pup be sure he comes with a health guarantee and a Vet check before leaving the breeders home with the pup.

Do you know what a vet check entails? The breeder said she was getting that done when he gets his second needles. Does this include blood work. Something I could certainly ask the breeder but because of the time difference we usually communicate by email and I am just curious.

No you want to do that check with your vet. You have a pet guarantee with your breeder. You want to make sure the puppy is healthly when you receive him back.

Your vet will do a physical exam. temperature, listen to his heart and his lungs. He will look in his ears, eyes, genitals and his anal glands. He'll feel around his whole body for lumps and bumps or tumors. Checking his fur and belly.

While you are there, you can get his vaccines, heartworm check, stool checked and blood work. These are usually not included in the exam price. But I would have stool and bloodwork done

Thank you for the info on the exams! He will have the physical exam done before he comes back to me. I think I will proceed with the blood and stool just for peace of mind!

My gut is telling me that he is the best puppy for me! He was great on every way besides his cough! I will let everyone know when I get him in 5 weeks!

Make sure your vet does a full exam too. You want to make sure that he is healthy.

my little girl have a "cold" once or maybe twice before I got her (can't remmeber now).... when I met her I fell in love... and there was no changing that no matter what she had going on! she has been healthy ever since she came home with me! not another cold yet! and she will be 3 years old in march!

I think you will know in your heart what is right for you... Gidget was meant to be mine from the first time I saw her... she was very small- underweight - and needed to be hand-fed... I feel like I saved her... because no one else would have put in all of the effort to get her to a healthy weight like i did... she would not eat dog food and so i was cooking all kinds of different creations to find something she would eat and then sitting there for an hour hand feeding her to get enough food in her.... you decide what you're willing to do for your baby... and if they're really meant to be yours... there isnt much you wouldnt do!

Well... you know what you have to do... be patient (easier said then done) and wait for your little guy to heal up. When he gets to you, get all the necessary tests to ensure he's healthy. Let us know his progress!

Sorry I didn't get back with you soon enough. But I think Verbenda answerd the question for me! Just be sure that you read the Health Guarantee over verry carefully and agree to everything. I would be sure that it included some sore of guarantee associated with the effect of the Kennel Cough.

That's a beautiful story Gidgets mommy! It shows that some people will go above and beyond for their pup. I love Grim so much but wouldn't be able to handle a dog that was prone to sickness. I am still a student and will probably have to work full time for the next 40 years so I'd like to dog that I wouldn't have to worry so much about all the time. But yes I will do everything in my power to get my little guy back and I am sure that he just has a cold and that everything will be ok. I spent so so much effort and time picking my breeder and my puppy (at least 6 months maybe even a year before I put $ down) do it would be a shame if he didn't get better. Thanks so much for the kind support you have all shown me. This site is a blessing and it isn't taking long for my posts ranking to go up! Lol. It has really helped me more then I can say. I am greatful for every opinion I get as I know you have all experienced different things and want to help your fellow yorkie owners!

I too love your story and can totally relate. My husband and I hand fed Georgie for months still do sometimes. The immense love that he gives us makes it all worth it

I would really take another look at who I was buying from. A breeder that is over crowding and does not have the most sanitary of conditions would tend to have "kennel cough" problems. If that is the case there could be other more serious problems going on at that breeding facility as well. Things like possible bad breeding practices and poor quality breeding stock not to mention possible genetic disorders.

I know it is not the puppy's fault but when you are choosing a pet that could be a family member for years to come it is imperative to make the best choice for your sake and for the sake of the pet.

Thank you for the advice. I totally get what you are saying and this is why I created these posts! I'll be honest though, I did a lot of research before picking a breeder. Over 6 months at least before I put my deposit down. They are ckc registered and are on the "canada's guide to dogs" website. Besides physically flying to the location of the various breeders I contemplated, there was no more research that I could've done. If it doesn't work out with the puppy I originally had I'd be extremely hesitant to take another simply because I felt I couldn't have been more cautious. People may suggest visiting the dog before purchasing but in my opinion that is way too costly for me. I live on an island in Canada and flights off the island are an absolute minimal of $700 return. My current breeder is almost 6000 km away by land alone! Not including the water distance as well! There are only a few breeders of yorkies where I'm from and tail docking is illegal! So anyways what I'm trying to say is that other then physically going to the pups location, no more research could've been done on my part. So this makes me worried about the whole puppy picking process.

I have friends who one day decided to get a puppy and got one that day! Pure breed no less! And they have had zero medical issues. Me on the other hand, I research I pay a hefty price tag, I wait months before I decided on a breeder and also had a deposit on a dog for months before he was even born! I also had last pick of the litter so her puppies go fast. It's really hard to say what to do. I'm a bit suspicious and worried about the whole thing. I wish this never happened, it really put a huge damper on it for me.

We have a yorkie and a shorkie that both had KC when we got them. They were both from Pet Shops. I could have given them back but I couldn't part with them. I brought them to the vet and were given antibiotics. It took about a month to really cure them. I had other dogs at home so that was a problem but I kept them seperated and they were fine. So to answer your question I would not take another puppy I would wait for your puppy to get well.
