| ![]() hello, i'm new to this site as a member even tho i have been reading on here for a couple of years.. i decided to join due to my rocco getting sick over the last few months.. I have had rocco since he was 8 weeks old, he is my best friend, i love him so much...recently he has been breaking out in hives (twice in 2 months) and he will shake and hide for a couple of days at a time every 3 or 4 weeks for about 3 months... so his last episode of shaking and hiding i knew something was wrong since he hasn't eaten or drank anything..i took him to the vet and they ran blood and did a separate pancreatitis sample and it came back positive....he has been in good health up till now, he has been on the same diet of chicken soup of the soul (senior dog) goes for a mile walk every other day average.. i just am looking for some insight on this and how to get through this... i've noticed he hasn't been drinking water today or yesterday...so i'm getting a little worried...so i just put water in a syringe and put it in his mouth to give him something... any ideas on how to keep his life going strong... |

| ![]() i am so sorry your little one is sick.. i'm afraid i dont have any advice for you as i have no experience with this illness . I know others on here do so i hope someone can help you.. i do however have one suggestion for getting more liquids into him, maybe add some water or wet food(ask your vet about this) to his kibble. |

| ![]() Has your vet not suggested admitting him for IV fluids? If he is not eating or drinking, he could end up terribly dehydrated .. and not to scare you, but these pups can go down quickly and die from pancreatitis. Two days of not eating or drinking is way too long! Keep an eye on his gums....they should be moist to the touch. If you lift his lip you can touch them...if they are dry and sticky to touch, he is in need of fluids...and certainly more than what you can give him in a syringe. Most of the time, in acute pancreatitis these little ones need a few days of IV fluids. They also need meds for pain as this is a painful condition. Welcome to YT. I hope your little Rocco is feeling better soon.

| ![]() If he's shaking, the swollen, irritated pancreas and liver could be hurting him. Maybe the very long walks are a bit much if he is all swollen and sore internally, IDK. Have you asked if there is some pain medicine that might help those two swollen, irritated organs and ease him a little? When my Tibbe was sick with GI problems in June and his GI tract - not his pancreas or liver in his instance - were so irritated, he would shake and isolate, reverse sneeze. Besides his prescription food, he was put on Cerenia for nausea and some Pepcid. He did reverse sneezing fairly frequently during that month's long episode. The Pepcid stopped his esophageal irritation I guess and eventually as his innards soothed and quieted from the GI-friendly food, medication, rest(he slept a lot), he stopped shaking and isolating. But his CPL snap test was negative so his pancreas wasn't involved though his lipase was high, though the vets couldn't palpate a liver edge or anything. It took time but he finally started responding and all internally finally calmed down and we started back on "walkies" up and down the block after he stopped his shaking/isolating and felt better. Just a thought for what it's worth. Welcome to YT though I am sure sorry for your Rocco's current bad situation. A lot of Yorkies seem to get by with pancreatitis on here and do pretty well once the treatments are all worked out. I pray Rocco feels better very very soon.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() He is such a cute little man. I am sorry Rocco is going through this . I would add water to his food or even organic chicken broth. I would also put some broth with the water to drink. See if he would drink that instead just to get fluids in him. Good thoughts and blessings go out to you both

As far as diet is concerned, you need a low fat diet for his ailing pancrease...the lowest fat you can get in a kibble is Royal Canin Gastro-Intestinal Diet. You need to feed small meals, several times during the day....easier for him to digest small meals....if he insists on a wet food added, you can add Fromm's Four Star Nurtitional Shredded Chicken mixed into the kibble...again, you want small meals 3-4 times a day.....but you need to have a vet make sure your baby is not dehydrated....and like ladyjane stressed, he needs something for the pain as this is a painful illness.... |
