| Just diganosed with Inflammatory bowel disease My poor Gizmo had an endoscopy and colonoscopy last week because we could not figure out what was causing his chronic pancreatitis and colitis. We found out that he has inflammation in his stomach, intestines and colon as well as a bacteria infection (hellicobacter) and also possibly a food allergy. Hes taking amoxicillian 50 mg twice a day, flagyl 25 mg twice a day and budesondine 1mg per day as well as Pepcid 2.5 mg twice a day. Has anyone else had success in keeping their dogs IBD under control? What medications did you give your dog and for how long? What diet seemed to help keep their IBD under control? Gizmo is still not acting like himself 100% and the vet said it could take some time. I hate giving him all of these medications since hes only 3lbs Thank you everyone! |

| Daisy has IBD diagnosed at age 6 (she's 12 now). She has severe allergies and liver disease also. When we have had flares the treatment has been antibiotics and pepcid. She is managed exclusively on a home cooked diet. I have tried various diets, however, they have not been "perfect" for her -- only home cooking is. We did OK on purina HA for a while, however due to the low fiber content, it was not that great for her IBD. This food might be worth a try for your dog though. A friend of mine has a dog who has IBD (another breed) and he is managed on steroids for flairs as your dog is and eats the Hill's z/D. If you want to do a nutrition consult, I use Dr. Remillard who is out of the NCSU vet school. Good Luck.

| Actually, I didn't catch the chronic pancreatitis in addition to IBD. That makes me more convinced you need a nutrition consult.

| Gizmo's first flare up last January was pancreatitis so we just thought that his food had too much fat.. so we switched his food around but since then hes had 2-3 more attacks. So the vet seems to think since his whole digestive system is inflammed thats why his pancreas was as well. So to be safe i am cooking for him. Yesterday i boiled a whole turkey breast, one turkey leg, carrots, potatoes and celery and then drained it and chopped it all up and put them into small containers to freeze and he seems to be liking it. There is also another company that makes natural dog food here in san diego right next to my house called Perfect Pet. They will actually work with your vet to develop a diet for your dog. Which i think is awesome so we might go down that route. We will see Thank you for the info on the nutritionist!!! |

| My last little girl Keally had IBD since the day we brought her home from the breeder. My vet treated her with metronidazole all her life. When she was twelve we put her on budeside [ spelling may be wrong ] This last drug worked wonders because it only worked in the intestines. We had her on predisone a few times but I did not want her on it all her life. Anyways we fed her Prescription Science Diet ID and I gave her the ZD for treats. We had her for twelve and a half years until she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She lived a good life and we gave her lots of love. Keally knew her disease but she was a real fighter until her brain tumor. I felt the metronidazole could of contributed to her tumor but we would of lost her right away.Hope this helps and your baby gets on a road to recovery. Susan |

| Ok, this is about my husband, not Harry..... Andy suffers from Diverticulitis (awaiting an op on his colon) and he too is on amoxicillin etc. etc. It didn't seem to be helping at all, so we went the 'natural' route alongside it. He has to take a teaspoon of honey every day - just like that, off the spoon. All I know is - if he forgets to take it, he flares up the following day. I wonder if it might help your little one, obviously in a much smaller quantity? It might be worth looking into Good luck, I wish you all the very best. Sally + Harry x |

| Hi and thank you for replying... sounds interesting... diverticulitis is completely different than IBD so i am not sure that would be a good idea.. but i am glad to hear that, that is helping your husband.... just make sure he stays away from nuts or seeds that can get stuck in the diverticuli best of luck in his future surgery! |
