| Sick Toy Yorkie Mix - help! Hi everyone, I'm new to the site but worried sick about my 3 yr old, 5lb yorkie mix. He has had diarrhea for a week now. We changed his food last Monday and thought this was what caused the diarrhea. There has been no change to his behavior and he plays & eats normally. Yesterday he had bright red blood in his stools in the a.m. and later that afternoon his stool was very dark brown/black - so I took him to the emergency vet hospital. They gave him subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics. Today, he woke up with same dark brown/black diarrhea but now he won't walk and cries terribly if i touch him or lift him up. I called my vet - she doesn't seem concerned. My main concern is the dark stools and now the fact that he cries if you touch him. Pain is coming from area where the fluids went in. They told me to fast him for 24 hours at least, but I feel like I should give him white rice or pumpkin at least? Any suggestions? Thank you! |

| Time for a new vet. This is a major concern and your pup should be immediately seen again. If bloodwork and xrays were not done, they need to be.

| I can't believe that your Vet isn't concerned, to me this is so wrong. If it was me I would find a new Vet and get there immediately.

| Thank you - this was my reaction as well (and a major reason i posted on this forum, I just couldn't believe they said not to worry!). I've scheduled an appointment with a different highly recommended vet today at 3:30. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you all again, Aly & Gizmo |

| I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry your baby has been so sick. I agree that your vet should do an x-ray to see if there could be an obstruction that could be causing the pain you've described. He should also do a panel of blood work to help determine your baby's diagnosis too. Perhaps you should go to another vet for a second opinion but you could request copies of your baby's file to bring to the other vet so they will know what has been done so far. I hope he'll be feeling better soon. |

| Good Grief ! Any Vet that says don't worry to me, when I am worried better have the test results/ or right answers to PROVE there is not a problem ! With small dogs a speedy reaction to symptoms is much safer, than lets wait and see. Maybe you need a new Vet. Please up date us when you can.

| If he's not vomiting, I don't understand why the vet would want you to fast him for so long. Some white rice and pumpkin sounds like it would be very mild and he would at least not have to remain hungry. Please update when you can, we all worry for these sick kiddos like they're our own
