| Fractured hind leg, splint or surgery? Our yorkie puppy Mollie (4 months) slipped off our friends bed who was watching her. She noticed Mollie was limping, after an x-ray the vet discovered she had a fractured growth plate near her knee. It's in a spot where the fracture can get pulled apart more every time Mollie bends her leg. The specialist told us we can splint the leg for a few hundred dollars but he recommends we do surgery to pin the fracture together ($1800). Do we need to do the surgery or will a splint work. We need to decide today or tomorrow. Please help! Thank you, Andrew and Galina |

I have seen many cases where splints were used and they did not work. If the specialist is recommending surgery, that is what I would do! Just make sure this is a board certified surgeon because I have also seen vets use IM pins alone and they did not work. I had a foster who ended up having to have bone grafting after the vet had done a surgery that was not the best choice. Usually a plate and screws are needed. Good luck!

| Breaks on growth plates can affect the way that leg turns out permanently. There is definitely good reason to go to surgery.

| Prissy broke her back leg and is in a splint, but her growth plate was not affected and a specialist concurred with our vet to splint. It was been a rough journey for her, but her last xray showed good healing. Best wishes and healing for you and your baby!! |

| I agree 100%. The same injury happened to Gracie when she was about four months old and we had the surgery done. She has no problems with her leg now and she's five years old. What's funny though is because she was in a cast she had to pee with her leg out to the side and she still pee's that same way to this day.

| Id go with the surgery. My boy had a break about the same age, but fortunately not near the growth plates!
