I have seen many cases where splints were used and they did not work. If the specialist is recommending surgery, that is what I would do! Just make sure this is a board certified surgeon because I have also seen vets use IM pins alone and they did not work. I had a foster who ended up having to have bone grafting after the vet had done a surgery that was not the best choice. Usually a plate and screws are needed.
