| IBS and ulcers Hi everyone. I have an 11 month old female yorkie named Chloe. I got her last Oct. she was 12 wks old. She started having intestinal issues the first week. I took her to the vet and she tested positive for giardia. That cleared up. She has had some diarrhea off and on a couple of times. My vet has put her on flagyl . Each time about 1 1/2 off meds it comes back. So they did a complete blood work and she had some elevated lipids which is indicative of ulcers. So they put her on flagyl and amoxicilian for 14 days plus ulcer medicine and pepcid. I called my vet today to tell him the soft stool has come back and now he wants another stool sample. Then he will put her back on flagyl and amoxicilian. If they find nothing in the stool, they are going to do an ultra sound of her intestines and go from there. She doesn't act herself all the time and that worries me not to mention she is such a picky eater. He wants her off dog food for a month so I am cooking her chicken and beef with rice (she hates rice). I am feeling frustrated. My last 3 yorkies had CHF so I am used to sick dogs and taking care of them. I have just never heard of a puppy having an ulcer. I was just wondering if any one on YT has heard of this. Thanks so much. Joanne |

| I would take her to an internal medicine specialist.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Giardia is notorius for re-infection bc it sheds off the dog while they're infected...so once the dogs fight it off w/ a med, they pick it back up again via the shedding. Also, giardia commonly can hide under scope - so even when the test is negative, they can still have it. There is a test that has higher sensitivity, but they usually have to send it out...that may be a good idea for your kiddo. It might be worth doing one more fecal...and if it's giardia, then you know the root of a lot of issues. If it's not giardia, then I'd ask your vet if it's a good idea to go to an Internist so you can get to the bottom of this. Dogs can def have ulcers, just like humans. They can usually be managed pretty well. Has she been vomiting or anything? Or refusing food? So sorry you and she have so much going on . Hang in there, you'll get to a better place of health.

| Hi and thanks for your replys. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. My daughter was in town for her bridal shower and I forgot to come back on and check for any replys. My vet sent out this last stool specimen and I just got the results back today. He said they didn't find anything. Chloe often doesn't eat good in the morning. She will sometimes eat as late as noon and she is a picky eater now. She doesn't like rice so I am giving her green beans and some kind of protein as per vet instructions. We go back on the 18th for another blood test to see if her lipids are still elevated. He suggested today that if her diarehhea continues we put her on tyleson and a hypo-allergenic dog food that they sell by prescription only. Also they may want to do an ultra-sound of her intestines. I bought some probiotics from a pet store and I am going to start giving her some and see if they help. I will also ask about a internal medicine vet. |
