| Question about post op behavior Hi everyone. Lily was spayed this morning...woke up after anesthesia about 5 hours ago. I brought her home three hours ago, and I am just wondering what normal behavior is. She is walking around wobbly and a bit sideways, like a crab. She seems to be having some sort of little tremors every few seconds ( this is sort of freaking me out - but maybe it is totally normal) even when she's sleeping. And she's sleeping most of the time. I am pretty sure this is all normal, I guess I am just looking for reassurance. I would love to hear any info that you all might have from experience. I love my vet and totally trust her, but she is not a big talker and the pat operative info was sparse. What has your experience been with recovery time, post surgical pain....really anything you would have wanted to know/hear when you brought your baby home from the vet! Thanks all!! |

| Was she given any vaccines on the same day as her surgery? No, I don't think this is normal for recovery... call your vet.

| My Sophie is rather wobbly after anesthesia and that could be the same for your pup. Next day she is 100% better. Always good to keep a close eye on them in any event.

| No vaccines in the past month. I am keeping a very very close eye on her...haven't left her side for a minute. She drank some water, I gave it to her with a spoon as she wouldn't drink from her bowl. And she ate some wet food off of my finger. She also asked to go out to pee... She's still got the shakes though... Anyone else with any experience??? Thanks Last edited by Dinokaya; 07-17-2012 at 06:40 AM. |

| Try giving her some Nutrical or pancake syrup.... Age? Weight? Crab like is not the same as wobbly...

| She is walking better now. Not so much sideways, more wobbly. I think she is slowly feeling a bit better. Lily is a year and three weeks, and weighs 2 kilo. That's about 4.5 pounds I think. I will try giving her some syrup...maybe that will do it. Appreciate your feedback. Kjc, have you had your babies spayed/ neutered? If so, we're they like back to normal after a few hours, half a day? Although she is more lively now, she is certainly no where near back to herself... |

I always advise to keep waking the dog/puppy up every 30 minutes or so, help them up and try them to walk around a bit, offer a drink and an opportunity to relieve themselves, each time until they are very normal. This helps to work the anesthesia out of their system. They can be offered small drinks of water and a tiny amount of bland food (baby food chicken is good) every 30 minutes or so. Shaking can indicate being cold or low sugar, so the Nutrical/syrup and a blanket will come in handy. I would say anywhere from 6-12 hours again depending on the dog. You should be seeing steady improvement each time they wake up or you wake them up. Small meals and drinks are important to prevent vomiting, which they will do after fasting and eating or drinking a large amount. And with the smaller ones, getting them to eat would be a priority, although still keep the offerings small, but frequent.

| Thanks for all the info. She seems to be improving all the time. She is walking around much more and better. Still not herself, but much improvement from my first post! It's so unnerving to see them out of it and seeing that they don't get why. Poor baby!! Can't wait to see her return to her happy playful self! Thanks again Lisa |

| You're welcome! So glad that she's improving... you had me worried too! She may be sore for a few days, do restrict her activity... no running, jumping up or down, no stairs for two weeks. Check her incision at least daily, anything abnormal (swelling, redness, anything oozing out, missing sutures, etc) call or see the vet.

| Whew, glad to read that your girl is feeling a bit better Did the vet give any pain meds for her? Shaking can be a sign of pain, that's why I ask. If she continues shaking I would insist on some pain meds if you don't have any for her. Keep up the good work
