Summer is sick. :( My sweet foster, Summer, did not eat yesterday afternoon. She was acting a bit funny later in the evening...tucking her tail and was a bit shaky when I would pet her. She did play a bit with Armani, so I figured I would wait until this morning to see how she was. Well, she did not even look at her food this morning...no physical symptoms such as vomiting and/or diarrhea; but I just was not comfortable and took her into the vet. Her lipase was over 4,000 and her belly was tense, so she is on IV fluids for today and probably at least 2 more days. They also gave her Bupranex for pain. Poor baby. :( Similar to what BabyGirlRosie posted recently, I am posting this to remind people that it is good to know your pups and get them in quickly when they are out of kilter. If I had waited until she had more symptoms Heaven only knows how bad she could have gotten. |
Its good you got her in so quickly. Good thoughts for Summer |

Right now there is something going on with pups in this area....my vet is off today and her partner told me they are getting a lot in with these symptoms. Funny...a friend of mine just called me and said all of her pups are sick with stomach issues. |
Poor girl She has had enough rough times in her life. Sending prayers |
Poor little Summer thinking and praying for her. |

I am so glad that you knew to get her in so quickly!! I agree with you about getting them in quickly bc you know your own pets enough to know when something just isn't right. I have several acquaintances that laugh at how much I will bring my dogs in, but I would far rather err on the side of caution vs having them suffer!! I really hope Summer starts feeling better soon!! I know it had to be hard to leave her there, but hopefully she will be back home with you soon!! |
I hope Summer doesn't have to stay too long and gets to feeling better soon. |
Thanks for letting me know what that high count can indicate...I'll add it to my list;). These little can sure worry us half silly...but I too, am all about prevention..if possible. My thoughts are with Summer, hope she starts feeling much better soon. |

You really cannot always go by labs....it often has to be a combination of things. That's why it is so important not to get too upset about labs and it is often why many vets and doctors will not allow their staff to release labs to clients (they prefer to speak with the clients themselves)...it takes objective and subjective information to come up with a diagnosis. Better to leave diagnosiing to the pros. |

I pray that Summer just has an upset tummy and no other issues. Poor baby girl has already been through so much. I always take a proactive approach to vet care. If something seems off, we go to our vet. |
Crisis avoidance as opposed to crisis management! Always works out best for all involved! |
She is home for the evening....they left the cath in so she can go right back on fluids tomorrow morning. Poor thing still has a very tense belly....they did an xray to make sure that all they are probably dealing with is pancreatitis. I had an interesting conversation with my vet's partner (my vet was off today). He told me that whenever there are thunderstorms they often see GI issues. Well, we have had them all week as Yorkiemom1 knows...and poor Summer really stresses out over thunder. Maybe, just maybe, it might be a cause for pancreatitis.....you know we all focus on what the pups eat...but it is a fact that the cause for pancreatitis often is not really known. I know that in the future when I have one with pancreatitis, I will be thinking about this. Stress does cause a lot of medical issues. Anyway...she has had two doses of Bupranex today so hopefully she will have a restful night. Thank you everyone for your well wishes. Summer is a very special little girly! :) |
