She does not give lepto because it is not a risk here in this area and the side effects are many. I would have to think my pups were at high risk of contracting lepto before giving that vaccine. I would suggest you find out the risk factors for your area.

Lily is my delicate one at being around the 4.5 to 5 lb range. We always give her only one vaccine at a time. Then waiting 2-3 weeks before she gets another one. I don't do Lepto...I do the DHPP, Rabies every 3 years, Lyme-once a year- had one with Lyme and that's all.
My vet didn't want to do lepto because the vaccine doesn't cover all strains of lepto. Her thought is why risk the side effects if it's not 100%.

Lisa, Piccolo is absolutely gorgeous! I would never have noticed her ears if you had not pointed it out. Beautiful baby girl.

My vet too......also starting to give core vaccines every 3 years, after checking titers....

Many of you know my little foster Sammy. Sammy had lost the hair on his ears for no known reason but the vet was not concerned. He had come to me with no hair and it had grown back so we thought maybe it would again. Nothing really remarkable was noted until today. The tip of his ear had some crusty looking stuff...and looked to me like cutaneous vasculitis. Sure enough...that is what he has. So...he is on prednisone and she is going to call the compounding pharmacy and get pentoxifylline tomorrow. Poor Sammy...I just hope he does not lose the tip of his ear.

For those of you who don't know Sammy...here are a couple of threads that tell about his history. Poor little thing has a boatload of conditions...but honestly he is in very good shape and does not let it get him down.

if that is the same picture you posted on facebook I did not even notice the ears, I was just looking at his darling face, poor Sammy, the little guy has sure has had it struggles, give him a big hug for me tonight, I wish I could reach out and give him a belly rub.

Linda, as you know, I have shared with you Piccolo's struggles with cutaneous vasculitis in the past. She also took prednisone and pentoxifylline. We went to a compounding place to start off with for the medicine, but it was so expensive, that we starting buying the pills straight from the vet and they were only $12.00 for a whole bunch, instead of $40 for the compound that did not last long.

He will be in my thoughts and prayers today, poor guy.

Sammy is a bit over 3 pounds...they don't have pills in his dose. We may forgo the Pentoxifylline anyway....he seems to be responding to the prednisone. My son's pup who had this did fine with just pred.

I agree about the prednisone. I think that is what worked for Piccolo, not the pentoxifylline. (I just gave it to her as a little bit of insurance, if you know what I mean.) I do remember cutting those pills was quite interesting and I did buy a pill splitter, which I am sure you have. But, her dose was more, I am sure, because she weighs 8 lbs, not 3.

Anyway, so glad he is responding and if he is anything like Piccolo, those black yucky crusty things in his ear will eventually turn to scars that are smooth. Does he have any of those crusty spots anywhere else on his body, or is primarly in his ears?
