| Ellington was just sick As some of you may know, Ellington has had runny poo since I got him on Tuesday. I went to the vet today, who just said to give him carbs - bread, rice and pasta. I tried this today, he wasn't eating much - although would wolf wet meat if I allowed him. Just took a shower, and came back to find Ellington had been sick. he has vomited the rice back up! It is late at night here now, is there anything i can do for him at home? |

| I'm sorry but you'll need to find a better vet. His stool needs to be checked under a microscope as many pups go to new homes with stuff like Giardia and such, and diarrhea can dehydrate them quickly. If you see changes in his behavior, like lethagy/ not eating.... I would take him to an emergency vet asap. Canned plain pumpkin (1 teaspoon) may stop the diarrhea temporarily, but he still should see a good vet, to be sure he's not harbouring any microorganisms. Often pups with digestive problems are fed a 50/50 mix of chicken and white rice... a bland diet helps the digestive tract to heal.

| Thanks, Ellington isn't a pup, he is 5, so it is a tiny bit different. But still very concerning. I am waiting for the vet to open again. I'm not sure we have tinned pumpkin in the UK! Last edited by LondonRee; 05-03-2012 at 10:17 PM. |

| Here to many of us the term "pup" does not mean a baby dog. It is just another term for dog. |

| So, just back from the vet. She said he still looked pretty well and lively which was good. She weighed him and he has lost some weight. She gave him an anti-nausia injection, which was very painful (she says it is the only downside to the drug) and gave me some pro-biotic. I am now boiling some chicken up. |

| Is Ellington doing any better? Did he eat the chicken? I'm betting that he did if that injection made his tummy feel a little better

| You probably are already doing this, but be sure to feed him several meals for the next few days with just a little food in each. His stomache will be able to handle it better. Glad that he got some meds to help him. |

| He hasn't been sick again, but still has watery poo. He is loving the chicken, and the chicken water. We're both exhausted and need a good night's sleep but he is struggling not to poo at night (don't blame him!). |

| Ellington update - He is still a bit dehydrated, but his poo tonight had a shape. Still very soft and with muscus, but definitely had a shape. Really hope we are on the way up! |

| Did the vet check his stool? Many things can cause diarrhea. Parasites Giardia, coccidia, samonella, E-coli, and an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut, stress, food allergies, viruses like Parvo and distemper, etc. Mucous in the stool could be from colitis or Giardia. Probiotics help to restore good bacteria in the gut, necessary for digestion... I give it to mine with every meal. Letting a pup/dog go on too long with diarrhea can have adverse effects on their health, dehydration being one that can be deadly. Pedialyte to drink would help too. After this amount of time, IMHO, I would have a stool check and bloodwork done asap. | Thanks for your info! No, the vet didn't ask to check his stool. Just happy to let him settle in a bit longer with the probiotic. Will read those links now. |
