Sat night at ER: Max gagging Max is okay, but we would appreciate positive thoughts that all is fine. Max started gagging late this afternoon. He was breathing fine and even eating, but he started rubbing his face in the carpet like something was wrong. Still breathing fine, but when he tried to bark he would start gagging hard and sounded raspy. I checked the corners of his mouth to make sure he didn't have any hair down his throat. We went over to the doggy ER and saw a very nice doc. I was relieved because I'm so nervous about seeing vets I don't know, especially for something potentially serious. The doctor was confident that Max doesn't have anything in his throat, but he did see a little irritation. After the exam and discussing the remote possibilities of what Max would have had access to today and the fact that he was never out my sight, we decided against sedating for xrays. Max did have a CET chew today, but I held it the whole time and he never got a piece off of it. Max already sounds better, but is reluctant to bark. We are going to keep him under closer supervision (meaning I won't be sleeping). |
Sending good thoughts your way. I know how worried you must be. I hope you will keep us posted and let us know how he is doing tomorrow. Give Max a hug from Daisy and Teddy Bear. |
Oh, Lord, I know how scared you were and are but hopefully he just got a bit of irritation in his throat from something and it will heal up. Yorkies are such grubbers, going after things in the grass or anywhere, if you looked away for a moment he could have gotten something rough in his throat. Hope it stays nothing and he's much better tomorrow. |

I should add that I don't think it was cellophane or a leaf, because he was never out of my sight today. Hairballs and a little stuffing ball he could have licked up quickly and tried to swallow immediately. Everything else he plays with in his mouth. |
Oh my how scary Kristin...I will pray that Max is all better in the morning. Give him some get well hugs from me and my crew. |
Agreed. Scary. I'm glad he seems ok now. |
Hope he stays feeling better! That must have been scary! |
Oh poor Max! :( I'm glad that it wasn't anything serious and he is feeling a little better now. |
Poor baby! I had a similar scare with Cooper 2 years ago. He was coughing and doing a lot of heavy swallowing. He had a throat infection and we never knew what caused it. Could have been anything that scratched his throat. If I remember correctly Cooper had a fever and was given antibiotics for the infection. Did the vet do any treatment or just suggest to watch him closely? Any fever? As you probably already know, I'll be around all night tonight. |
Oh my! I'm glad he's okay and is sounding better. I hope he's back to his regular self very soon. |
Prayers and Good Vibes being sent out to Max. I am glad that there was nothig stuck in his throat and that he seems to be doing well. I know it's going to be a long night for you. |

You know Tibbe was chewing some on a rawhide chewie today but not for long, mostly what he loves to do is carry them all around the house and hide them and then come tell me to follow him. I'm supposed to find them and then act excited and throw them and he races after it and it all starts all over. Well, anyway, after a session of doing this, he lay down and started chewing on one end for a bit as I watched but soon he was down and "hiding" it over by the TV. He started reverse sneezing and he hasn't done that in forever. I am wondering if that thing scratched his throat or something, even though he only chewed about 3 minutes. I've noticed his reverse sneezing usually seemed to come after chewing rawhide or something hard chew but after this, am becoming more convinced. He's gagged some after chewing some but nothing bad. Could that CET chew have scratched his throat even though you never saw anything? |
I hope Max continues to improve and that you get some sleep after the day you had. Give him a hug from us. |

This did start an hour or hour and a half after the chew. |
Thank you everyone for the well wishes and prayers. |
I just about had a heart attack, Kristin, when I saw this just now. I just came in after dark. I hope little Max will be ok. Does he still do that or has he stopped? Did they mention giving any benedryl or not? |
I wouldn't be surprised if the chews irritated him. I hope all is ok! |

I hope it is just an irritated throat. Benedryl would help relieve it, I would think anyway. Did you know they can get tonsillitis? |
maybe he is developing environmental allergies...i hope he continues to improve. i know that would scare the crap outta me!! i do hope you get some sleep and he does too! |
