| ok, know I'm upset! Zoey is at the vets as I type. She started throwing up last night and continued episodes after eating. I changed her to Stella & Chewy's dehydrated paddies about one month ago. I was really concerned with the 30% fat in the paddies and I came here and asked about the high fat content. Believe me, I'm not blaming anyone but myself but I did get some responses that because it was dehydrated the actual fat content was much less than 30%. Well, know she has pancreatitis and I am really upset with myself since my little Gina died from this and suffered terribly. The vet said that since she is doing well and that this is just a "burp" and with proper diet she may not have any more episodes. I'm off the the pet store to get some new food. I am so angry with myself. Thanks for listening to my rant. Cherie

| Prayers for your Zoey. Don't blame yourself ... I would definitely listen to the vet about what to feed her; but no sense looking back. It may or may not have been the food that caused this. Sometimes they get pancreatitis for unknown reasons. That said, I don't listen to online advice about what to feed my pups. I am a firm believer in vets and especially those that are board certified in nutrition.

| Well it might be okay for other yorkies. Honestly mine eat all kinds of meat all the time and they are 7 and have never had a pancreatis episode. All dogs digestive systems are different so whats good for one isnt necessarily good for another

| Sounds like it will be okay. Yup, the internet is not a good place for nutrition advice... Dehydrated or not - if it's 30% dry matter, it's 30% dry matter. Way too high for Yorkies. I used to get away with giving Ellie a lot of questionable things too - until one day she just couldn't take it anymore. Not worth the risk. The vet could (and should) give you an rx food for now. Then you could talk about what to switch over to later.

Or there is yorkiedaze who homecooks and has for like 50 yrs without incident. IIm not questioning you at all Im really curious about this. I know we are taking a chance giving ours meat I dont do it my Husband does. Hes the one that will be paying the vet bill if anything happens since I cant convince him its not worth the risk. I think he trys to make our yorkies happy with food. He says he only gives a tiny bit

| He said he didn't think she needed a rx diet right now. Just lower the fat content to 5 or 6 percent. I just got home from the pet store and looked at all the kibble food and they are too high for her. I have been feeding her Nature's (or Natural) Instint raw (wet) and it is 6% fat and 10% protein. So I'm going back to that. I only changed because I hated feeding her cold food even though she didn't mind. We never had any problem with the wet raw.

| That's 6% with moisture included. On a dry matter basis (which is how it has to be measured) it is much higher. If you post the moisture %, I can do the calculation for you. Very few OTC foods truly have 5-6% fat. And the ones that do are made by companies that may not be too consistent (the fat % on the bag is a minimum - they can add much more if they decide to that day). Good luck!

Believe me, I spent years giving Ellie whatever. One time I gave her a huge plate of old, fatty beef and onions..because that's just what you do for dogs! She was fine. Then a Frosty Paw set her off. Then some not-so-lean beef in her homecooked food... It happens with no warning at any time and can cost a life.

Yes, we are pretty sure it did. She wasn't diagnosed then, but looking back, she had the same symptoms of what we now know her pancreatitis cases look like.

Dehydrating a piece of meat is not going to reduce its calories, make it any healthier, and I cannot imagine that it would lessent the fat content, either.

My husband did the same thing to Gina. He loved her so much that he wanted to make her happy and he killed her. He grieves about this even today. Just a little piece of beef with some tiny fat. Five days later she died. I leaving now to pick Zoey up and bring her home. Will keep you updated.

I'm so sorry that your little one is sick from her diet and hope that you can find something that will work out for her and help keep her well. It is so awful when we try our best to give them what we think is best and then something bad happens from that. With another dog, this food may work out just fine so how could you know ahead of time this dog would not do well on it unless there were glaring stories of horror from others about lots of bad experiences or dire warnings on the nutrition websites? Try not to feel so bad and be sure to give that baby good hugs from Tibbe and me!
