| Possible Mast Cell Tumot I took Lexi to the vet today for a lump in her ear. The vet did a small needle aspiration and is concerned about "possible" mast cells she may have seen. She did admit to not getting a very large amount of tissue to see in the microscope. But recommends surgery to remove and send to a pathologist. Lexi is only 3 years old and everything I read says possible Histiocytomas. I like this vet but I did not get a good feeling about her truth in finding mast cells on the microscope. She seemed so quick to recommend surgery. Perhaps she is being over cautious. Has anyone heard of mast cell in this young a dog? I am thinking of taking her for a second opinion but hate the thought of them sticking her with a needle again. Surgery is far more evasive. But With surgery the lump is gone and my mind is at ease. Its not about the cost of surgery because I will do that in a minute. Its more not putting her thru it if its not necessary. And I just have this bad feeling about the vet making some money at Lexis expense, or being over cautious because she did not get a good sample. She just seemed so passive about it. If she saw something for sure, wouldn't she just say, "Lexi needs to have it removed." ? Maybe time for a new vet? Any advise is appreciated. Perhaps I already know what I need to do but appreciate anyone in the vet area that would have some insight on this. |

| If it was my pup, I would have it removed and biopsied. Better safe than sorry. Here is a link that is pretty thorough in its explanation of mast cell tumors: College of Veterinary Medicine

| One more link. If it is mast cell, you want to get it removed sooner rather than later. Mast Cell Tumors

| Yes, dog's as young as 3 can get MCT's. If she were mine I would certainly have the lump removed and have it sent off to pathology. Do you trust your Vet?

| If it was my puppy, if I trusted my vet without hesitation, I would do as she says. Being a nurse, I am a HUGE advocate for second opinions, so if I had ANY questions about what I thought was going on, I would then take my pup to a specialist or a school of vet. medicine for my second opinion. This is just me....I dont EVER want to be thinking to myself, "If I had only.....". |

| Thanks ladyjane for the links. Very informative. I must not be comfortable enough with my vet or I wouldn't be questioning things. I want to get the lump removed and tested. I trust her to do that. Perhaps I need to initiate a better dialog with her and have her answer some questions for me. The fact I had to google mast cell tumor myself and ask questions here was what made me uncomfortable about my vet. Was she assuming I knew what she was talking about? I will call and talk with her. If I still have that gut feeling, I will take Lexi for a second opinion. I am just hoping we can have it removed and be benign. But if it's not I need a vet who can lead us forward. Thanks everyone for listening. |

| I am praying your baby will be ok. Maybe you could bring her to the University Of Mn. Veterinary Hospital. I definitely would get a second opinion and better to fet the lump removed. Hope all goes well for you. Susan |

| Update Last friday morning I called my regular vet clinic to ask some additional questions regarding Lexi's Tumor. The vet tech could not find answers to my questions. Advising me that the vet had not completed her notes in Lexi's file. She said she would have the Vet call me. As of this moment I have not received a return call. With that being said I took her in for a second opinion and a new vet this morning. This new Vet was very informative and thorough. He advised that with the unresolved small needle aspiration (not even sent over by the previous vet yet) surgery to remove and biopsy would be the best route. He even went over best case worst case so I was comfortable with him no matter the path we are given. Price for Surgery was comparable to the other Vet. So.. Surgery is scheduled for Friday. Please keep Lexi in your prayers that her new Vet be gentle and kind yet aggressive with her treatment. |

| I'm glad that you went ahead with the surgery. Mine had a small cyst on her side that my old vet just kept saying to watch it to see if it grew. When I took her the the vet that I've changed too now he did surgery. It was a mast cell tumor but thank God he got it all. The only thing that I didn't like was she had to be on a small dose of predisone so that maybe it wouldn't come back. It never did and she lived just a few day shy of 18 yrs. |
