Default I think we over did it yesterday- feel terrible!

Ok, so Brutus got neutered and teeth pulled on Friday. It seemed like everything went great and he was recovering with no problem. He acted liked nothing had really happened - yesterday he was the same, running, playing, etc. Heck I even took him for a walk as he seemed so great. I think that was a big mistake.... My first clue into something wasn't right is that he didn't wake me up between 5:00-5:30 to go potty, instead I woke him up to go out and to eat. He did do his potty and ate just fine, then right back to sleep. He has been sleeping all day, will get up walk around and then right back to sleep. He usually wants to be where we all are, but he doesn't seem to care today, as long as he has a bed. His nose is cool, and his stiches have no seepage. Did we let him over do it? Is this normal to not be letharic until day 2-3? He is on pain meds once a day, but he had one yesterday and didn't act like this. My poor little guy! My husband thinks I am over reacting as I am telling him we are going to the vet in the am if he is acting the same. Now, as I have been typing this, Brutus has came back in with me and is doing his normal "digging" at one of his beds - more normal than not.

Aww

Didn't the vet give directions to keep him stiill for a week (no running, jumping, playing, going for walks)??

Are his gums pink and wet?

Gums look good- checked those as well. I was hoping you would reply Ellie, any YES - the vet did say to keep him calm and low key - but he is usually a really active pup, it's hard. I think that is what I feel terrible about - THE WALK. Usually we run on our "walks" for my health ( trying to loose weight), so I thought if we just did a normal walk it would be ok - guess not. We only walked about 1/4 mile - normally we run 1/4 mile and walk 1/4 mile. Given how he was acting, I didn't realize he could have a set back. Good Lord I feel like crap now, though he has started to perk up a bit since I have started posting. The humping is really odd and he just tried to chew on wood furniture- which he never did before and is confusing since now he has less boy parts and less teeth. He ate lunch about 15 min ago. - so far so good.

Awwww.... I'm sorry to hear little Cutie Brutus isn't feeling all
that well..... but it definitely doesn't sound normal, to me.
Riley was a teeny bit drousy after I brought him home and
then by the next morning it was as if nothing had happened.
But the Vet did tell me to keep him from running/jumping and
No Walks... not even normal walks for 10 - 14 days.
Riley was also sent home with pain meds. He was given Rimadyl
to be given a couple times a day, if I remember correctly.
The Vet told me to give it to him until it was All Gone.
I felt like the Rimadyl sometimes made him a little crazy....
and was glad when it was all gone.

If he isn't better by the morning, I would for sure be taking
him right back to the vet. Hoping you won't need to do that though.

Sending good vibes for a speedy recovery.
Keep us posted.

He needs to go in a crate or on your lap (or on a leash relaxing) for the next week at a minimum. No walks. No jumping. Carry up stairs if possible - at the very least no running up stairs. No running. No playing rough. If he isn't kept quiet, he will be at risk for surgical site damage. If you want him to go on walks with you, then you can carry him.

Watch the incision for any major redness, heat, pain, or swelling. Watch gums for anything other than pink and wet. If he continues to act off, I'd call your vet in the morning.

Yes, the vet gave us 4 tablets of Rimadyl (25 mg), to be given a half tablet every day - so 8 days. He acted so fine yesterday, and has started to really perk up over the last hour, so I think he (me) had to much yesterday and he needed to re-coup, he has never been a low key lap dog- very spunky. I really don't mean to sound like an idiot, but I have never had a dog before, and feel like sometimes I am winging it. I mean, low-key to the vet and low-key for us (I know my dog) can be 2 totally different things. Now, I understand what can happen. Hopefully Brutey will continue to be active the rest of the day and wake up at 5 am like normal. If not, we will be going right back to the vet. I love this little guy and really didn't have any idea I could cause harm to him- going by his reactions. I guess moms (vets) do know best. What did I learn - don't give in!

We just had our little Annie Spayed here a couple weeks ago. She had quite a rough time as she didn't like the pain. They had to give her extra meds. because she was so miserable. We had the same experience and didn't take her on any walks or anything. Day 1- she was totally out of it. Eyes rolling in her head and she whined and wouldn't move. Day 2- She was so sleepy we had to wake her up. We had to carry her to potty and she would go where we put her and then want to be picked back up. She was more awake but just wanted to hang in her crate all the time. We even had to put food and water on her blanket in her crate to eat. Day 3- We saw a little improvement, she now would come out of her crate for eating and drinking. But then would go directly back in and lay down. Day 4- She finally started perking up a little. She would walk around and look for attention but was still reserved. By day 7 she seemed amazingly better. Back to her old self. We are now at day 13 and she wants to play all the time. She is going up and down stairs like a rabbit. We were really worried to and ran Annie back to the Vet. twice to be looked at. I always err on the side of caution. If you don't see any improvement by tomorrow I would take him back for a peek. If anything it made me feel better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Brutus isn't crated ( maybe another mistake on my part), and we have been carrying him up and down the stairs and haven't allowed any jumping on furniture. I think it was that stupid walk. Thanks so much for your suggestions, I will definatley keep monitoring him and checking his incision as well. He has really perked up, so I am hoping he just had to re-coup .

I hope the little guy will be ok. I wouldn't walk him yet though. They seem to think they can do anything after a day or two, but they really shouldn't.

I'm sure he is just fine! Dogs have tired/lazy days just like we all do! If his health is good, sleeping more isn't a bad thing. Lots of healing takes place during sleep. Your baby will be back to his normal self in no time, I am sure!

How is Brutus doing?

And yes, pups should get used to being crated or at least x-penned or gated in small areas because it is necessary sometimes. Even chasing a toy or running to bark out the window could adversely affect the surgical site, esp. after overdoing it already.

He is back to his normal self, thank goodness. I guess he did just need a day of relaxation. No more walks - obviously but he is just a little fire-ball of energy without them. He is also really missing his chew toys and I have found him chewing on household items (furniture legs) that he never had an interest in before. You know how they run around like crazy after a bath??? Well, that is exactly what he keeps trying to do. He'll take off and start trying to do laps around the coffe table, when I try to catch him (dang they are fast) he thinks it is a game and I am trying to play with him. When I do get him, it takes for ever for him to "settle". I think I'll break out the x-pen tonight and see how he does, but I have a feeling he will try to jump like a kangaroo to get out.

Mine are like that too. Crate with a top so he can't get out would be best for him right now. He will get through it. It's just for a few days.
